I remember in one interview she talks about French Performance and Theater during the Imperialist era. She talked about how the Born This Way Ball was very stripped back to mimic french imperialism; where the audience is focused on the artist completely, not distracted by what is going on in the background. Love the iconic image of Boticeli's 'Venus. I'm pretty sure she is the ugly ducking and she wants it that way since she isn't "A beautiful swan" *(GP, not my words lol). I hope the black swan during the koons line is telling of the vma performance. Love that she focused on magicians and jesters and clowns... starving artists. She could have easily filmed a live concert, and even released a video of her being followed around all over the world by fans but she didn't. She is showing us her multiple personalites. The FameMonster-esqeu gaga all crazy in a cage, the goddess/ savior gaga, the raw fighter, the showman, the dare devil (the one catching knives). The "don't touch my tomatoes" bra, Goosega, the giant prosthetic leg, the tail...all are really cool and interesting visuals. I like the German Expressionist carny movie inspiration, and the editing is pretty flawless, but there was no narrative. I don't need her giving birth to a new race of people and I don't need her fleeing the country after she kills a diner full of people...but I need something. The Bad Romance video was full of great visuals, but it had the brothel plot line to tie it all together. You and I was another sort of masterbation in weirdo vissualettes but it had the a romantic twist that gave viewers something to think about while they were being punched in the face with Jo and a mermaid.
