I was thinking about this today: how would've the BTW era been if Interscope released experimental songs as singles? For example, instead of releasing Born This Way as a lead-single, they release ScheiBe/Heavy Metal Lover/Government Hooker. Do you think that singles like that could've been more successful, thus making the album sell even more; or do you think that singles would've flopped, thus making the album less successful?

I think risky singles would've pushed the album in a better place, but maybe that's just me :awkney:

So, tell me, charts experts :P

I think riskier singles would have hurt it.  Obviously, Born This Way had to be the first single.  Judas and Marry The Night were risky, the former because of it's religious references and the latter because of it's slightly less mainstream dance elements.  Both of those songs didn't turn out well.

TEOG and Y&I were very safe, and they were also great hits.  Ballets with a more obvious personal connection with the artist sell albums a lot better than jams with a more abstract meaning.  We as fans obviously know what GH and HML means, but everyone else doesn't.  I really don't think that any of the songs you listed would have had any chance.  Maybe scheisse, but I don't think it would have been worthwhile to release it over TEOG or Y&I.

I think TEOG just could've be bigger... with the proper video + proper release It could've definitely top hot 100 ...
Hair should've been a single as well ..   It was the only song after You and I that would've been a top 10 hit ... I love every song on the album tho... but I never understood how can people think that Scheisse would've smashed and that Hair is overproduced mess ... It's overproduced yes but that isn't a bad thing especially in Hair's case ..

I think that You and I wasn't safe WW and it actually didn't happen because of the country influences. The song is barely known in Europe, Asia and Australia because it couldn't become a hit outside the US...

Most people who are praising the song right now pretty much bashed her for the title so I assumed you were one of them
