Blurred Lines has already taught the entire music industry something this year though, so..

It has crushed everyone and everything for the entire summer so far.

Same lesson as Fun-Gotye-Carly-PSY-Macklemore. The one hit wonder out of nowhere with a fresh sound is the biggest threat in singles, not Britney or even Rihanna.

Can't really "learn" from this because none of them start lasting trends, although some have a 2nd or 3rd strong follow-up.

Robin isn't comparable to fun./Gotye/Carly/the others because he's not a new artist and he's not a one hit wonder. He's had hits before and he's been around for a long time.

He benefitted from a combination of name recognition, Justin Timberlake opening the doors for R&B on pop radio with "Suit & Tie", a controversial music video, and "Blurred Lines" simply being a great song.

He was born 1974, and had only one real hit in 2007 (#14).

But really, most of these one hit wonders are 30+ and have been around in music with previous albums. Even Carly, everyone was saying how old she was for her genre and did did Canadian Idol about 5 years before.

As more as a retro R&B trend goes, I hear Robin's follow-up sounds more like LMFAO.

The key to a hit song is to release singles that are strong enough to break a new artist. Pop stars tend to stay in their comfort zone, which is why they rarely have hits as big as "Call Me Maybe" and the like.

You don't have to come out of nowhere to have a hit. You have to treat your career as if you're constantly coming out of nowhere.

He was born 1974, and hasd one real hit in 2007 (#14).

Hot 100 performance is not the only deciding factor of a hit, though. He had several singles that did well on urban radio before "Blurred Lines", including two #1s.

Your first comment is so true - acts who are hot get to ride the coattails of their big hits for awhile..

From the perspective on international pop fans buying Blurred Lines, his US Urban radio success is about as foreign and irrelevant as Carly's modest Canada-only success or PSY's career in Korea.

Clarity should be top 10 again once Holy Grail and C&GI drop. Holy Grail may maintain its stance in the top 10, though, since its getting good airplay updates.

Make a song about rape with tits in the music vid and you got a summer smash.

Let's hope Gaga takes notes

I hope that she won't tbh! :coffee:   The last thing I wanna see now is Gaga's tits in a video clip for a song about raping the gays. :nails:
