Lorde slams NZ media welcome as 'sad'

By Matthew Theunissen

11:50 AM Wednesday Jan 29, 2014

Grammy-winning singer Lorde was swamped by fans and media when she arrived home to Auckland this morning - and the pop star wasn't happy about the reception she received.

The 17-year-old touched down after a whirlwind week in Los Angeles which saw her become a global superstar, taking time to meet adoring fans, sign autographs, pose for photographs and talk to the media, despite being "very tired" after a long flight.

But Lorde later slammed the waiting New Zealand media for almost pushing over her family during her arrival, calling it "a bit of a sad welcome if I'm honest".

"nz media almost pushed over myself and my family at the airport this morning in order to get their shots. bit of a sad welcome if i'm honest," she wrote in her first tweet.

In an uncharacteristic subsequent flurry of tweets, since deleted, the pop star then went on to say she was frightened by the media attention and called the media scrum unacceptable.

She said she was under a "constant, often lecherous gaze" and said she no longer felt safe in her "tiny home country".

She tweeted: "i understand that people of note are supposedly fair game for everyone to photograph and film but that doesn't make it acceptable.

"i'm beginning to get used to my image as a public commodity, and the fact that I'm getting used to it frightens me.

"there is a difference between attn from fans, which i love, and the constant, often lecherous gaze that i'm subjected to in this industry.

"i know that success comes with a price tag. it just sucks when you see that in your tiny home country where you previously felt safe."

Air New Zealand staff performed a haka on the tarmac when her plane touched down and signs were displayed on the airport's noticeboard congratulating her on her success. BfGjwY_CUAA3LsB.png

I hope she remains unaffected by all this & never gets used to it, cuz once you get used to this, then it becomes a problem!

I saw that yesterday :(

I feel bad for her, I mean she obviously didn't expect something like that but who would.

I saw the pictures of her arriving and she seemed happy in earlier ones but looked scared and annoyed in later ones when she was leaving the airport

I could imagine it'd be a big adjustment, and probably really scary to receive that much attention. Not everyone can handle it. Paparazzi have no concept of privacy or personal space (which even famous people should have a right to), which is incredibly sad. It's all about getting the best shot, with no regards for the stars.

"i know that success comes with a price tag. it just sucks when you see that in your tiny home country where you previously felt safe." She clearly know. I do think it sucks she can't even feel safe in her home. She's only 17, after all.

God I love her. I think right now Gaga could probably really give her good advice. Lorde is so new to this mega fame and its extremely hard. All we can do as Little Monsters is support Lorde and empathize with her fans because Lorde is going through the same thing Gaga is. I also feel like Lorde kind of stands out in an unconventional way like Gaga. Its not the same way, but she certainly stands out. Remember in the beginning of Gaga's mega-fame with the dick rumors and the constant scrutiny of how crazy she acted when playing the piano? Lorde is experiencing the same thing. The media is already calling her boyfriend ugly (I think he is adorable) and I saw alot of people calling her "fat legs" after the Grammy performance. I also saw some people saying the way she jolts looks like she is on crack. Don't people realize thats just for effect in the performance? Sheesh. Anybody that stands out in an unconventional new way artistically or performance wise gets torn apart! But when Miley Cyrus appropriates black culture, twerks, and has semi racist themes in her VMA performance after not caring that she gutted Gaga from having an amazing artistic performance, the ****ing world praises her. This **** is so unfair. #JusticeForLorde #LittleMonstersLoveLorde

It's going to take her some time to get used to it since she's still really young. I don't think she expected Royals to take off the way it did.

Poor her, it must be so difficult having people be enamored with you and throwing money at you to sing your songs.

I don't think that's what she's complaining about :awkney: She clearly states she loves her fans, she just hates the media.

That must be hard to adjust to so quickly. A year ago she was still unknown to most people. Her rise to the top has been similar to Gaga's - a meteoritic rise very quickly. It would be hard for anyone let alone a 17 year old girl.

Did they follow her to her home? I do hope she does fine with all this attention ad hang in there :(
