since we're all in a jolly mood I think it's time for me to admit I have no idea the difference between a governor and a senator :ororomunroe:

A governor is like the president of a state and a senator is someone who represents a state in the US senate :laughga:

Maryland apparently is going to have a referendum on congressional districts. Can anyone with more knowledge tell me if this is a good or a bad thing?

There is a rule in Maryland's consitution that says "you can divide the state up in pieces for elections and stuff but they have to follow, like, smart boundaries. no gerrymandering pls"

There are people there who are saying "well, that rule only applies when we elect people to the state legislature. it doesn't actually mean we have to follow that rule when maryland divides itself up for the representatives who go to Washington DC!"

A yes vote would mean "yes, we agree with those people." A no vote means "no, you can't stop gerrymandering on a state representation level but not for a national representational level, get over yourself."

Dems want to gerrymander the districts.

Current state constitutional rule requires the districts to be compact and properly connected (so none of this criss crossing county line bs you see in gerrymandered states).

Its a Dem gov and state lawmakers pushing for it in a reliably democratic state so its potentially good "tactically". But morally we shouldnt be enabling or normalising gerrymandering.

Thank you! I think we don't really have an equivalent of a senator in Canada (where I promise I'm much more politically aware lol)
