Basically because they didn’t hit their revenue projections for their search engine, not anything really to do with the AI itself. More and more people are using AI and not actually using the search engine anymore.

We've hit the realistic limit of what is possible with the latest AI advancement due to the sheer costs involved & the resource constraints.

A market contraction is the obvious next step in the process. 

And then we're seeing a wider issue across the tech sector in the west where the cost of living crisis they've actively created through their political lobbying and manipulations are dragging down revenues for even the non-AI platforms like Roblox (which has seen a noticeable sustained drop in active player base).

I mean, it is the AI itself arguably. 

The search engine revenue is predominantly derived from ad revenue - clicks = profit. 

Traditionally, the top 3 of the search were often paid placements.

The AI summary they put into the search engine effectively replaced the placements. And not just that, actively scraped information from the links (without generating clicks for google advertisers or traffic for the actual sites accessed) and presented it to you and then directed you into gemini for follow up questions. 

It's a butcher moving the meat to the back and promoting veganism in the shop front. You're actively killing your own business.
