because she didn't say "i don't want to sell things"

she said she didn't like being used to sell things she didn't want to sell

at that moment in time, she wasn't happy selling fragrances and felt really used for money

the nurtec thing hardly stopped anything as she has continued to sell things straight after that so it didn't really blow up in her face

i think you need to rewatch that talk she gave because the point of her talk wasn't "i don't want to sell things", the point was she felt so used as a money maker by those around her that she finally started saying no to things she didn't want to do at all and that helped her feel like an artist again

None of these are strong arguments. She made it very clear in 2015 she hated being used to make money for other people yet most of the stuff she was pushing in the early 2020s was making money for other people. In the most inauthentic way possible too. At least the perfumes had innovation, creativity and input from her all behind it.

To discontinue her own line because she didn’t like selling perfumes but then released a whole makeup brand is very…contradictory.

And the butter thing did stop a lot. There is a clear divide before and after in how her instagram now looks, the products she tries to push now and even had to follow up nurtec with a long post about her still being into music to lessen the backlash.

The public sentiment around openly calling yourself a feminist changed MASSIVELY over the course of a few years, as did the public’s perception of what a feminist actually is.

There’s a huge difference between someone not identifying as a feminist in 2010 and in 2026.

Yeah I took that as her acknowledging she has “passing” privilege as a bi woman who dates men publicly.

MTE. As a cis bisexual woman who’s been in a “straight” relationship for ~10 years at this point, the idea of walking into a room full of gay and trans people and acting like I have any business talking about ~*our community*~ makes my teeth itch lol

I think the only real contradiction is the same one that all famous artists veer into: you start as an anti-establishment figure, you reluctantly become part of the establishment, and then you not-so-reluctantly enjoy the perks that come from being at the tippy top :ohwell:

Acting like money is really not your priority then promoting Nurtec despite the scandals of its head company.

This reads completely differently in a post-You Can See Everything contextual world … because, maybe Gaga wasn’t/isn’t acting, maybe money really isn’t her priority, and maybe pharma promotion includes several parties with varied interests :ohwell:

But who ever knows in this post-warholian world of subjective realities and elastic truths!

so you've continued to misunderstand her point

she didn't she didn't like FEELING she was being used to make money so she started saying no to select projects

the product deals you're now seeing are ones she's happy to go with. that doesn't contradict her statement at all

absolutely wild for you to assume the perfumes had any sort of innovation or passion from her end at all. did you see the eau de gaga campaign? did you read her body language during FAME? she did NOT want to be there at all, there was absolutely minimal innovation and input from her lol

again, not contradictory since she absolutely hated promoting it. as someone else here said, she demanded it be made with black liquid or it wasn't happening at all and her attitude during the whole promotion was very off putting cus she clearly wasn't happy. this completely falls in line with her talk in 2015 where she said she wasn't happy selling fragrances to make money for others

why are you shocked it got discontinued? even if that isn't the reason, the sudden split with troy is also another reason as to the discontinuation. how can you blame her for that and say she's contradicting herself when it's beyond her control?

you're misunderstanding the context of which FAME and Haus Labs exist in. she hated FAME, she loves Haus Labs, what's so confusing about that?

We all have contradictions :neyde:

As long as you can’t relate to Trump’s lvl of karmaic debts, I mean if it’s not too serious, idealistically we should let go past remorses and regrets.

Except for that one blue Enigma wig-

Saying money isn’t your priority when you’re a public figure in general is a contradiction.

BUT if we use nuance, that little thing people lack nowadays, she was actually talking in the context of her music the first time she ever brought it up “I don’t really do this for money, or fame I do this for the art.” If she truly meant it entirely monetarily she would’ve not been famous and still just making music on the lower east side.

To be fair, that last Haus Labs formal statement (re: Golloria) read like Gaga does not necessarily love how Haus Labs has been operating more recently … internal conversations, public apologies, and all but explicitly stating that the campaign in question did not reflect how she aims to direct her company, etc. seemed to present some sense of dissatisfaction on Gaga’s part …

On the topic of the Instagram thing; that’s just how social media functions now. Celebrities got sick of seeing people sending them hateful and ridiculous things online, getting into arguments with each other and the rise of right wing rhetoric and the favouritism of the algorithm—specifically the fact that it prioritises engagement bait and monetisation now. It’s not exclusive to Gaga, almost every artist who is a millennial has went through this turnover where they stopped using social media for social things and made it into a way to promote and advertise.

To be fair, that’s a common beauty community type of statement. It happens all the time now when people get called out for lack of inclusivity. All they probably did was push internally for the new shades to be bumped up (most likely they were being made anyway), and probably add some diversity training and talks.

It doesn’t seem like Gaga built a beauty brand, and put the amount of time, effort, and love that she has into said community-oriented company to make public apologies about a lack of inclusivity, especially this far into the company’s development …

That Gaga, the Gaga that—however many shades of “social advocacy” she has expressed or embodied throughout her career as a public figure—championed for some sense of representation for those on the margins, had to release a “common beauty type of statement” that mainstream companies deliver when they get “called out for lack of inclusivity” which “happens all the time” in the very sector she aimed to change … speaks volumes …

And that she “probably [added] some diversity training and talks” almost a decade into this company’s establishment … again, this does not read as a trajectory Gaga necessarily loved more than FAME’s trials and tribulations …

At this juncture, hopefully the lessons were learned from that nadir and her team ensured those lessons weren’t lost moving forward …

But again, I’m just going off of optics and what is being presented to the public marketplace … as always, much appreciate your insightful perspective … I haven’t been involved with the beauty industry in over a decade, so I’m definitely novice here :laughga:
