She made it very clear in 2015 she hated being used to make money for other people yet most of the stuff she was pushing in the early 2020s was making money for other people. In the most inauthentic way possible too. At least the perfumes had innovation, creativity and input from her all behind it. To discontinue her own line because she didn’t like selling perfumes but then released a whole makeup brand is very…contradictory. And the butter thing did stop a lot. There is a clear divide before and after in how her instagram now looks, the products she tries to push now and even had to follow up nurtec with a long post about her still being into music to lessen the backlash.

hamartia 3,632
I think the only real contradiction is the same one that all famous artists veer into: you start as an anti-establishment figure, you reluctantly become part of the establishment, and then you not-so-reluctantly enjoy the perks that come from being at the tippy top "I lied. I lied!" (Germanotta, 2025) 1

This reads completely differently in a post-You Can See Everything contextual world … because, maybe Gaga wasn’t/isn’t acting, maybe money really isn’t her priority, and maybe pharma promotion includes several parties with varied interests But who ever knows in this post-warholian world of subjective realities and elastic truths!

Kayioshka 3,659
We all have contradictions As long as you can’t relate to Trump’s lvl of karmaic debts, I mean if it’s not too serious, idealistically we should let go past remorses and regrets. Saying money isn’t your priority when you’re a public figure in general is a contradiction. BUT if we use nuance, that little thing people lack nowadays, she was actually talking in the context of her music the first time she ever brought it up “I don’t really do this for money, or fame I do this for the art.” If she truly meant it entirely monetarily she would’ve not been famous and still just making music on the lower east side. 1

To be fair, that last Haus Labs formal statement (re: Golloria) read like Gaga does not necessarily love how Haus Labs has been operating more recently … internal conversations, public apologies, and all but explicitly stating that the campaign in question did not reflect how she aims to direct her company, etc. seemed to present some sense of dissatisfaction on Gaga’s part …

On the topic of the Instagram thing; that’s just how social media functions now. Celebrities got sick of seeing people sending them hateful and ridiculous things online, getting into arguments with each other and the rise of right wing rhetoric and the favouritism of the algorithm—specifically the fact that it prioritises engagement bait and monetisation now. It’s not exclusive to Gaga, almost every artist who is a millennial has went through this turnover where they stopped using social media for social things and made it into a way to promote and advertise.

It happens all the time now when people get called out for lack of inclusivity. All they probably did was push internally for the new shades to be bumped up (most likely they were being made anyway), and probably add some diversity training and talks.

It doesn’t seem like Gaga built a beauty brand, and put the amount of time, effort, and love that she has into said community-oriented company to make public apologies about a lack of inclusivity, especially this far into the company’s development … That Gaga, the Gaga that—however many shades of “social advocacy” she has expressed or embodied throughout her career as a public figure—championed for some sense of representation for those on the margins, had to release a “common beauty type of statement” that mainstream companies deliver when they get “called out for lack of inclusivity” which “happens all the time” in the very sector she aimed to change … speaks volumes … And that she “probably [added] some diversity training and talks” almost a decade into this company’s establishment … again, this does not read as a trajectory Gaga necessarily loved more than FAME’s trials and tribulations … At this juncture, hopefully the lessons were learned from that nadir and her team ensured those lessons weren’t lost moving forward … But again, I’m just going off of optics and what is being presented to the public marketplace … as always, much appreciate your insightful perspective … I haven’t been involved with the beauty industry in over a decade, so I’m definitely novice here 1
