Jack3257 874
I kinda get the feeling that maybe Ed Sheeran (or Ed and Justin?) was the plan, and then that got derailed. Dancing with the Stars did a Super Bowl halftime show themed night, and the network is airing the game for the first time in years, so I kinda thought that was set to coincide with the announcement. DWTS was on October 13, and Miley’s show was the 16, so I definitely think if it was going to be her there was another factor involved.

I think that's the point he was trying to make in including more black acts as primary performers, and it wasn't limited to black acts but pretty much any PoC headlining (see Bad Bunny and Shakira and J.Lo.). The variety is exactly the argument people of color were making during those years and now that he's done that, many people are effectively like "ok that's enough coloreds, you had your turn, lets go back to the default white acts please". I'm not sure which performers I listed were the headliners, but my point was that rap & R&B, even though they were super popular during the decade, were unfortunately not very present in 90s halftime shows, even though there were many black acts featured. Having grown up in the decade, there was a hysteria that rap was causing delinquency because of its ~offensive lyrics~, etc. The same kinda stuff that they tried to blame Marilyn Manson for after Columbine. Because of that, I think it took time for the general public to embrace it. So, I think it is great that it has finally has inclusion in the show. ps anyone with the "ok that's enough" attitude toward people of color because of their skin color/culture/ just their presence are coming from a misguided and harmful place, and I don't support that mentality one bit. It's indefensible. What I can understand, which I hope isn't being equated/misconstrued with a judgment based on race, is yearning for change of pace for the genre of the headline act. There are talented people of color all across the genre spectrum. And I strongly believe if there were 5 or 6 years of white pop & dance girlies on the show, there would be criticism. It's natural to want something fresh and different. (I still say rock bands are being severely overlooked! They bring the energy!)
