River 128,965
What is sad is that he's representing the opinions of many celebrities and each and one of them would react exactly the same (like I said in the past, even Gaga).. same statements, same decisions... these artists are like a product, a franchise, humanity is lost there.. like our dear Meja said "it's all about the money" and at the same time.. the show is going on, he's not canceled, because the majority of his fans thinks exactly the same. So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
JohnPokerface 1,076
I saw photos of the crown that attended this show, he still managed to fill that stadium. Just goes to show you that the outrage you see on the Internet is just that, it's not always a reflection of reality. He’s shown that he’s not very smart so I didn’t expect a better statement, very on brand for him. Where is this energy when it comes to politicians who could ACTUALLY make a difference and say and do nothing? Genuinely wondering. I do think Ed's handling of the situation was cowardly, but I can't help feeling like cancel culture has allowed and exacerbated people's sadistic pleasure in seeing a successful public figure being destroyed. I don't think this is helping anyone in the bigger picture. Politicians do get rebuked. At the ballot box. Celebrities can't be voted out of fame, they can only be criticized. And artists like Ed arguably have a larger platform than most politicians, he could use it to amplify the issue which puts even more pressure on politicians to make actual policy changes. Gaga stans love to give her credit for DADT being overturned, and rightfully so. That's what celebrities can and should do with their platforms. But there's no denying this specific conflict is one where everyone is basically ****ed no matter what they say, or don't say. It's infuriating to see atrocities being committed with impunity and the world basically standing by, but I also understand why some public - and not so public - figures want to stay far away from it. I think all this backlash and character assassinations aren't helping people talk about it. What happened with Ed Sheeran is literally getting this point across for the entire entertainment industry: I can tell you that everyone in Hollywood is scared shitless to get caught up in this matter. Eh, I guess I don't really care about the PR effect. His records and tickets will sell no matter what and controversy blows over with time. Just about the only thing that kills a musician's career is becoming boring. Then backlash will stick but it'll be secondary to the first thing. There's objectively a correct take here and that's to admit there is a genocide and to say it's wrong and should be stopped. Any criticism lobbed at an artist after that is really invalid imo. Or at least we can disregard it as nonsense. Which is why, despite Macklemore literally being semi-deplatformed as a consequence to saying the right thing, it's still pretty irrelevant. He'll still book gigs, sell out his own shows, move records, and gain streams. But now he has a lot of people's respect and he did the right thing, which is a moral victory. That matters, I think. Ed tried to play neutral in a situation that doesn't call for it and it's his indecisiveness that's made him most vulnerable. If he were just a raging zionist then we could say he was wrong and argue a point he actually holds but he's not "wrong" because he has no beliefs. He's just a coward that stands for nothing. And that was already a huge loss and failure on his part long before the people online ran with their agendas and narratives. Btw I hope this is legible, my meds are kicking in and WHEW I'm not even sure I'm speaking in full sentences but as long as you get the gist of it.
