Even comparing primes I’d still pick Mariah any day. Her range was wider, her artistry was better, she wrote her own songs, she even outsung Whitney on WYB icl.

I can see how you would pick Mariah; considering preference is subjective (and I was a massive Mariah fan growing up)—but/and also still … not within the original parameters of Whitney or Celine (to be fair).

Also, I would say Whitney‘s range (at her peak) was wider, and Whitney‘s vocal artistry was unparalleled—Whitney sang life into songs, her vocal tone and delivery humanized and animated each performance … she sang the stories into shared experiences each time she performed, and that she translated songwriter’s lyrics into new life is an art form in and of itself (being a singer who delivers a writer’s song is collaborative artistry … it does not necessarily negate one‘s talent—akin to actors who choose roles that they did not themselves write, or jazz vocalists who perform the “standards”).

But/and, again, this is subjective … even though it is operating outside of the original comparative parameters. Also, When You Believe, to be fair, was not Whitney‘s peak … so, although it was a duet between two vocalists, the plane is skewed … to be fair.

That’s my feeling. Both exceptional talents but kinda different vibes. Whitney had more of a church sound in her voice and Celine gives classic showgirl in that edith piaf way.

Isn’t it the other way around? Celine can at least perform live despite the damage on her voice while Mariah can barely hold a note now.

And on their prime, Celine actually out sang Mariah during Aretha’s concert. Well it actually became a duel between Aretha and Celine and Mariah was a background singer

Celine. Celine's catalog is deeper, she has HUGE signature songs in two languages. She helped transform Las Vegas, she has two of the most successfull residencies in history, she's a class act, her personality is unmatched. She's a true gem.
