While I understand why everybody is against Rowling, you all have to seriously stop acting like she has done all this by herself.

She literally has the final say in licensing, publishing, and adaptation rights. WB doesn’t own it outright, and she has final say down to how the merchandise looks and what they can and can’t include in the theme parks.

but yeah you need to grow up sometimes

it’s ok to have your opinion, just make it make sense

The irony of saying we need to grow up when defending watching a children’s fantasy series by a transphobe…would you say this to a trans person’s face whose rights are being stripped away due to legal challenges Rowling is funding just so you can enjoy a tv show?:Cautious:

It’s just like the people bitching about billionaires and then going on Facebook and Instagram all day every day. It’s never as simple as it seems, and when we try to simplify it with overall general statements, it leaves no room for gray.

So yes, I will watch. And no, I’m not supporting a transphobe. I am supporting a IP that I really love, and supporting countless people who have poured their hearts and souls into this, and yes, I will be putting my money towards her, but I do that all the time. Their are terrible people everywhere, and my money will go to them.

The obvious difference is that HP isn’t an institution or entangled in our daily lives. I have to use Microsoft for work; I have to buy gas; I have to use a computer for communication, lesson planning, and more to exist in the 21st century.

We literally don’t need to watch this series when there is so much children’s fantasy to consume. Literally Avatar: the Last Airbender covers the same themes, narrative beats, and character arcs HP does, and does it better.

A cinematic masterpiece that only holds if you saw it for the first time when you were under the age of 10? Something ain’t adding up…

What?

I don’t think it’s a cinematic masterpiece because it strikes me that most of the attachment people have to it comes from the nostalgia of watching it as a kid. Fun flick, masterpiece it ain’t.

Now you're just talking out of your prolapse, ghoulfriend

You know that adults saw it in 1993 too, right? Not just kids

It was, in fact, the highest-grossing movie of all time (at that time)

& was hailed as a milestone/turning point in filmmaking.

Your nostalgia argument could work on a movie like Hocus Pocus, but not Jurassic Park

I wasn’t excited about this at all before the trailer but after seeing the visuals, cast, and costuming, I still feel nothing towards this series bc of Rowlings bigotry. She destroyed her own series and I will always harbor bad feelings about a former beloved franchise

Yeah, many adults who took kids and some of whom enjoy cinematic amusement park style spectacle. It being high grossing and having an adult audience doesn’t make it a masterpiece, it just means that it’s an engaging and entertaining movie (which I never contested). I just said I don’t think the “masterpiece” claim holds up past some of the nostalgia factor, not that it’s a bad movie.

I also never said that nostalgia was its *sole* appeal, it just strikes me that most people I talk to *now* primarily have a formative attachment to it which, as someone who saw the movie for the first time at 20, I think shapes the convo surrounding it.

Anyway, I’m more than happy to stop derailing this thread. Truce, @NUTELLA?

Well you’re wrong about JP (& I hope @PartySick uses her moderator privilege to bind you like a goat inside a tyrannosaur paddock)

HOWEVER, in the interest of trying to quell any further argument, let me tell you that I have been trying since yesterday to find a clip I thought you would appreciate.... but it seems youtube deleted it.

So I’ll just need to tell you about it:

it’s from a behind the scenes documentary about the making of Hocus Pocus. Bette Midler is talking to Kenny Ortega on set... describing to him in detail how she wants post-production to make her electrokinetic powers look, & I quote,

“like Star Wars… like, VOOOOM!”

HP holds a very special place in my childhood heart - went to the midnight book releases, screenings, etc. If this had looked in any way unique, fresh, or different I might have overlooked her BS and tried to watch. But it literally looks like the 2001 movie - the color tones, set, costuming, everything. I don't understand the point of making a drawn out series that is just a re-do of the 2000's movies with the only difference being that Snape is black.
