US court rules AI child abuse content is protected under First Amendment

Wow...the Constitution is a founding document meant to GUIDE and GOVERN this country...it's astounding to me that the highest court in the land can't differentiate between freedom of speech and child exploitation and abuse...

This country is ****ed and deserves to be destroyed...there's no saving it if our own president, supreme court justices, department of justice, department of defense, department of health, etc can't understand BASIC levels of humanity and decency...it's truly disgusting to be an American and live here under this regime

This whole thing keeps getting more and more unstable … what an odd time to pass a ruling that establishes a precedent based on a Generative AI platform who just secured $76M in “fresh funding” from an “unusual roster … of prominent entertainment industry organizations including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group…”—won‘t someone unironically please consider the children in the entertainment industry …

And even more oddly entrenched, “Stability AI CEO Prem Akkaraju, who joined the company in 2024, called the funding ‘an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller.‘” … Prem from Parker‘s 2024 OuterBio Launch / Malibu “greenhouse coup” … whew, Polansky‘s business pals really are something else

Stability AI, the startup behind AI image generation model Stable Diffusion, has raised $76 million in Series B funding. The new haul brings the company’s fundraising total to $232 million.

The company announced the round Tuesday, saying the new capital comes partly from a number of prominent entertainment industry organizations, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and gaming giant Electronic Arts (EA). Two investment firms, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures, also took part.

It’s an unusual roster and a less typical venture round than a lineup of the companies Stability now depends on for content licensing and distribution deals.

Stability AI CEO Prem Akkaraju, who joined the company in 2024, called the funding “an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller.”

The company says it plans to use the money from its latest funding round to continue building out its “creative production” product suite while also expanding its professional services arm. Currently, Stability offers a variety of AI models that are designed for the purposes of AI music, video, and image generation.

Stability, founded in 2019, has spent the past year signing deals to weave generative AI into entertainment companies’ creative workflows. It struck partnerships with Universal Music and EA last October and with Warner Musiclast November, each giving those companies a hand in co-developing Stability’s AI tools rather than just licensing the output..

Stability has also had a mostly winning stretch in court. The company largely prevailed in a copyright lawsuit brought by Getty Images in the United Kingdom, which had accused the company of infringing upon IP rights by using the company’s images in the training of its image generation model. A judge ruled largely in Stability’s favor in that case, but a similar lawsuit from Getty in the U.S. is still working its way through the courts.

Again, I’m new here, and just learning as I go along … but, does anyone know about Morningview‘s partner companies … (ex. the Mayhem Ball fan gallery, AI-supported creative production, etc. for instance ) … just, considering the ruling in light of data sets and shared networks for training AI generation models … 

Or maybe, I guess, since UMG‘s funding was secured this past week, maybe it‘s more of future integration?

But, again, I’m so out of the business loop … the VC world is completely opaque to me …

Self-regulation is not an impossible ask for corporate and/or VC entities; but ”forgiveness not permission,” doesn‘t even seem to be on the table here because I don‘t think Stable Diffusion (for instance) was moving to make amends with the court case—the use of their platform was defended? That, and they are expanding their model through Series B entertainment financing … which likely integrates even more audience-generated content to train their models (ex. live concert footage)?

So, again, new here, but just working through the logistical dynamics of a really interesting case study in real time
