Ontario borders 4 large lakes and strangely the smallest of the 4 is named after Ontario, while it is the largest lake for New York state. If an overseas person would be asked to depict Lake Ontario on a map with all federal states and provinces in North America without lakes named, it would not be intuitive for him or her to correctly find Lake Ontario since 3 larger ones exist around Ontario, while it would be intuitive to find Lake New York since it would be the largest lake in NY state and somehow NY has more prestige than Ontario. On the other hand, I went to Google Earth, and Ontario province indeed has a 5% larger coastline than New York state, so it seems fair to call it Lake Ontario. But I'd rather rename Lake Superior (if there is Lake Superior, where is Lower Lake? If we have an Upper West side, we must have a Lower West side, too) into Lake Ontario and Lake Ontario into either Lake New York or Lake Greater Toronto.
