Everyone in Portugal knows this is just this government’s xenophobic bullshit to appease the rising far right party :madge:

In my opinion, face covering clothing hinders social interaction in a society where facial recognition and expression play an important role in communication, and hinders social cohesion in general. Clear communication and identification are essential in public settings like schools and hospitals.

This pretty much boils down to policing self-expression for the sake of “social cohesion,” which I’d say is the least justifiable defense tbh. If folks were talking about “public safety” (identifying criminals), I’d at least kind of understand the rationale, but saying “they need to communicate with me the way I want them to and, if they don’t, the government should make them” is wild work lol.

lotta people i thought were cool coming out of the woodwork as people i would never associate with.  this law is disgusting, end of story.  the only thing i can think of in a similar vein is a muslim girl who was competiting in figure skating and was docked points for wearing a hijab because they "didn't know if it was a constume violation or not."  disgusting, islamophobic behaviour.

everyone keeps saying "oh, he's back, he's back!" but the truth is i never left!

I do kind of agree with this "The face must be considered a central element of human identity and communication," but I'm afraid this will just fuel Islamophobia and is just a (pardon the pun) veil for a more hateful right-wing agenda.

It’s only happening because of Islamophobia icl can’t fuel what’s already there

To be honest - their country, their rules - others should comply, not to sound Islamophobic. If they can't or don't want to comply, that's their problem.

Coming to another country - follow the rules

Having a garbage take whilst having the name and profile picture of the most garbage of Gaga’s producers creatively oh I see the trend

you surely wouldn't be saying this  if it was a nation where coverings are required for women to wear. rules don't deserve automatic respect just cuz it's the rule of the land.

the conception of the burqa is incredibly and obviously misogynistic , HOWEVER, bans like these don't exactly help by virtue of these laws being enacted by right wing christains, extreme misogynists themselves, and these laws only being conceived out of imaginary racist scenarios of "Arabs taking over all of europe".
