But the whole purpose of time is so people understand what point in the day they or someone else is experiencing. If it’s 1pm everywhere but not everyone is experiencing the same time of day, the designation doesn’t mean anything. In order to make sense of a world without timezones, you’d almost inadvertently have to redo the calculus about what “time” it is somewhere else. Imagine talking to a friend in China and you’re trying to figure out when it’s appropriate to call them. You say, “it’s 1pm, are you up?” they’d tell you it’s later in the day for them and they’re in bed. In order to communicate with them, you’d have to figure out approximately how far apart in the day you are from each other in order to find a time that’s convenient for both of you to chat, which basically puts you in the position of essentially recreating timezones.

But you're not factoring in the "mental adjustment" period

Eventually, people would know what one time looks like worldwide (& know when it appropriate/inappropriate to call, for example)

 

It's 4:08 PM right now (in Chicago, but let's just say that was the official worldwide time)

With that in mind, 4:08 PM in China is early morning

Why is one flat "time" so nullifying of anything?

(but again, we would theoretically be removing the 12-hour clock... so it would be 16:08 worldwide)

You seriously think people are going to take mental inventory of what 1pm looks like all 24 timezones? That sounds like way more work than just Googling what time it is in Ireland and being able to compare that to a shared framework 😭

I'm not saying it would be an easy adjustment (especially for older people), but it would probably just come down map-style visuals distributed/pushed on social media

Especially with today's technology (one of the iphone wallpaper options is a real-time, moving visual of where the sun is around the globe at any time)
