I admire Mamdani a lot and still would even if he was right wing because he does something I’ve not seen many political people do in my life; he is a proud “small fry” politician.

He has given no indication of wanting to advance up a political ladder for a better salary or a bigger position of power. He genuinely seems to care about the well being of New York and the people in it even the ones who don’t like him. You can tell he loves the place he comes from in a patriotic way that’s also not blindly patriotic.

And also, the fact he can’t run for president is actually a blessing because you KNOW the Democrats would have been trying every way they could to make him run for office. And I think he would win. But that restriction kind of shows he’s clearly interested in being in community politics and not just having a title of being a politician.

I absolutely agree that he genuinely cares about NYC, but I think a lot of his rhetorical positioning makes it very clear that he sees a role for himself as a leader in the party on a national level (e.g. giving a sweeping address for America’s bicentennial laying out a populist, egalitarian, and progressive vision of the country’s history, taking on Netanyahu and the US’ complicity in the Gazan genocide ahead of the UN summit).
 

That being said, I think he does it because he probably recognizes on some level that he’s a talented messenger and that giving progressives quality rhetoric/talking points serves the pursuit of progressive policy (IMO, he basically rewrote the book on discourse surrounding Israel by publicly reframing it as an issue of ethnonationalism and theocracy vs. democracy, for example), but he’s definitely aware of his current position and I do think he probably has higher aspirations, but he recognizes that the rungs of that ladder are built on genuine public service and the ladder is climbed for the better of the country, not through cheap sloganeering and hollow corporate politics.

What's your disdain for Mamdani really about? Are you racist? Are you throbbing with worry because there's actually someone who came along who can get things done and possibly work to unite people? I'd be more concerned about politicians trying to keep people divided and not doing anything to help people, not someone like Mamdani who is not just about lip service and catering to billionaires.
