Had it come out in early/mid 2012 instead of late 2013 people would have given her credit for bringing EDM into the mainstream. Instead, she JUST barely missed the EDM train. This is true too. But to be fair she already had credit for bringing EDM mainstream from her earlier albums. I remember a big EDM producer in 2014 said if it wasn’t for her David Guetta, Calvin Harris and many other male DJWS/producers in Dance wouldn’t have been as big if The Fame hadn’t happened. The Dance music trend that still exists to this day wouldn’t have happened if Gaga hadn’t stuck to her guns and made 4 back-to-back dance albums in the late 2000s/early 2010s imo. Obviously she wasn’t alone because Confessions and other things happened, but she’s the only one who stuck to a genre lane and expanded it instead of entirely switching up. Do TF, TFM, and BTW count as EDM? I've always had a very specific idea of what that genre is and ARTPOP is the only album that comes close to that sound. But yeah, dance pop as a whole? She reigns pretty supreme and has since her debut. No doubt. Whimsical bitch

ARTPOP could have had a defining impact on the genre but instead it was just another EDM album for the gp. Slightly related, I'm glad The Cure was the only time she ever got near tropical house music 2016 was such a terrible year for music. Joanne is quite literally the only thing to come out of the mainstream that's worth a spin imo Not to be an “AcTUaLlY” person but The Cure is NAWT Tropical House if you listened to it at the time it was in the mainstream it’s very much an Electropop take on R&B. I get the comparison though because of the trend of the high pitched vocal chops of the time. But that’s not exclusive to TH. It’s meant to be in the same vain as WDYDT and HM from ASIB I find. Except Applause Gypsy and Dope that album was absolutely NOTHING like radio dancepop. It was actual EDM. You won’t hear songs like killah or cant stop the high or disease on the radio too I mean that’s the main reason why disease underperformed because it wasn’t mainstream pop and it was too hard hitting

She reigns pretty supreme and has since her debut. No doubt. EDM is just an umbrella term for hundreds of sub genres. All her music is Four-On-Floor except maybe Joanne and ASIB which is a sub of Disco. The Fame counts very much as disco and dance music (which is EDM), TFM has elements of techno, dance and disco. Born This Way although leaning towards electroclash more it still has elements of House, Techno and Disco. Electropop is just an easy way of saying pop music made of predominantly electronic elements. ARTPOP is the closest to “pure bred” EDM because it has songs that are outright; Complextro, Dance, Disco, Trap and Hardstyle. Which I felt she was always building towards.
djBuffoon 12,238
I've never considered her music to be all that crazy. She has a great talent for hooks and melodies, with interesting production flourishes and eclectic musical influences that show up in what are, on paper, really well-written pop songs. If anything, the more experimental demo/unreleased tracks we've heard don't appeal to me at all because they overshadow the elements about Gaga's music that I gravitate to. 2

And why is the excuse always “it doesn’t matter if she does or not”. I was under the assumption Lady Gaga was a bold person who said things because they were right, not because they were popular. It sucks, but at the end of the day she is a mainstream liberal type. Doubtful that her politics will ever extend beyond those boundaries. After all, she performed at Joe "We should stop apologizing for supporting israel" Biden's Inauguration. monketsharona 90,161
We all know the day she releases a VERY experimental jam album fans will stream it one week and drop it when it doesn't perform good in charts.

Like if you don’t connect to her anymore why are you even here lol and even if she dropped new music these recycled takes will still be made by the same people they just can’t cope with the fact that they outgrown her so they stay here complaining about everything and thinking it’s her that’s doing something wrong but it’s clearly not lol
BrandyFinest 872
Definitely. The disappointing part is that she definitely won't stop in this trajectory. Mayhem has done better than both Chromatica and Joanne, she has no motivation to not continue down this path. IG this is simply what happens, artists usually become slowly de-fanged over time. They give into the tropes/expectations that they've built up of themselves over time. I see it more like poetry set to soft y2k rock ala Marina or Lanas audiobooks. Not to mention most of her albums being insanely experimental and kind of out there for a pop girlie. As for Madonna.. she followed trends on Bedtime stories, Hard Candy, MDNA and kind of on RH.. thats 4 out of 18 albums if we count the soundtracks. Otherwise she set trends that people then followed, at least in the mainstream, on the more underground scene she was the student.

Our music habits were dictated by the 2000s so even still now we buy her album more than we stream it. We used to buy her singles on iTunes and on physical CD. When you stream every 100 streams or so counts as a sale, but if you buy a song outright on iTunes/Apple Music now and play that it only counts as one sale and the subsequent listens do NOT count as streams. And that’s the majority of her fanbase listening habits. Plus most of us are anywhere from our late 20s upto late 30s now and our music taste has expanded, so we don’t JUST stream Gaga. Gaga’s always almost assured a #1 album debut because there’s enough fans, younger people’s streams and the older millennial GP to support it in pure sales and streams. For context, DWAS went viral on places like TikTok as a trending sound and it ended up covering ALL her bases; her fanbase, millennial and older GP who like when she sings songs like that and a viral sound amongst young Gen Z and early Gen X. The last time she covered all her bases before that was Rain on Me and then Shallow and then Million Reasons with a bit of work. For context of how habits have changed Million Reasons was one of the last pop songs in general to sell 1m in PURE sales.
