God forbid a talented woman does what she is passionate about

Also this soccer mom boomer album you talk about has songs about masturbation, police brutality/gun violence. You might not like the album but that doesn't make it a basic album. It explores different sonorities and even if it didn't... it was a decade ago. And yes, it was risky. It was a complete departure pf her sound and style, not just the album but the whole era. She could have alienated every fan, confused the general public and never recover popularity/sales wise but she did anyway.

She continues to reinvent herself album after album and it's not her fault some fans throw a fit when a person with her own mind and free will doesn't act exactly as they want her to.

To me Joanne and the jazz albums always felt way less like natural artistic growth and way more like career damage control, and I just didn’t like that.

Personally I’ve always seen that era as a huge backpedal, like she was going backwards instead of actually moving forward. It felt like she didn’t fully stand behind ARTPOP once the backlash hit. so she swung hard in the opposite direction and started making cleaner, safer, more “respectable” music to rehabilitate her image. Almost like she needed to prove she was a Serious Artist™ again...

ARTPOP changed the entire trajectory of Gaga’s career and the way she approached being an artist after that. If that era hadn’t flopped and gotten dragged the way it did, I think she’d be a completely different artist today.

nd there's many long standing members on here now who are self professed Gaga casuals now compared to how they used to be and love other artists more -- I think that's fine personally. Not everything she does is gonna please everyone and we need views from all sides.

The fan base is nearly 20 years old so it's not surprising tbf.

If anything it'd be weird if *all* long term fans hadn't altered in some way or the other in terms of their consumption of music.

What some people don't fully appreciate when they make comparisons to other fanbases like Swifties is how age demographics play a role. For the most part, Gaga's not continually picked up large fan numbers from younger age groups in the last decade where as Taylor has.
So if you only see surface level stuff that breaks contagion from the Swiftie camp, its easy to go "oh that fanbase is nothing but love for her" etc because the main things people are seeing is the chronically online younger fans who have large reserves of energy to devote.
Gaga's fanbase is all young milennials and elder zennials. And we're tired.

Joanne definitely was, but we know for a fact C2C had been in the works since like... 2011 according to The Lady & The Legend documentary. Plus she genuinely enjoyed working with Tony, made Love For Sale over the course of her making ASIB and Chromatica. And she didn't have to make Harlequin at all and she did (and it's probably one of her best works in her whole discography, it sums her true artistry up more from her early years imo).

So I can accept that Joanne was somewhat damage control (emphasis on somewhat), but her Jazz albums would've happened regardless. Not a single song off those albums did well and they only went #1 for like a week each.

That definitely would ruin it for the people who think highly of Gaga and want to go somewhere to kind of celebrate that (i.e a fansite) - Nobody expects a mind-vacuumed, dystopian *Gaga is perfect in all she does* atmosphere, but you can tell when some people dislike far too many things about someone to have any place on their fan site. Like respectfully, move on

Like this discourse is literally useless i don’t even get it and everyone who actually follows gaga would know that a lead single like disease and a song like killah isn’t playing it safe. Even in her movie choices for example joker 2 was a risk and it didn’t pay off. She is doing both pop excellence and she is innovating at the same time while making interesting art. So I don’t get this need to go back and forth about this as if she’s doing something wrong when she’s actually getting the most acclaim for her work rn. It’s getting parasocial and weird as if she’s obligated to make a certain type of music to satisfy yall but that’s not how it works.. she is the artist and we are the public.

If they are casual listeners now why are they still the loudest about gaga and always criticising her work ? Nothing wrong with outgrowing an artist just be respectful to their work and move on because you don’t own the artist.

Yeah I agree with that, but you’re also picking the most generic lowest-common-denominator comparisons possible... Like anything is better than katy perry.

I am comparing her with her peers and current popstars…….. but also mayhem is more acclaimed than most (if not all) of Britney’s albums. Britney doesn’t even produce or write her albums lol mayhem ball is also bigger than all of her tours Britney hasn’t made a decent album is decades to be in these conversations and it’s no shade.

Femme Fatale had genuinely weird, left-field pop moments like “How I Roll” that played with unusual production choices while still functioning as mainstream pop

We can say the same about 911 and chromatica actually

Oh brother please… she was singing jazz before ARTPOP and she is still doing jazz even after ARTPOP😭😭😭😭😭 this forcing of this narrative is literally weird because gaga has stated many times that she is passed all that trauma and she is at her most confident self now

Very much this, people forget that Taylor was not as big as Gaga at all outside of the US until 1989. And now her dominance is because she HASN'T changed or evolved, she and Gaga re almost the same age and she still presents as 23 years old. Her music is all the same subject AND she re-released her already most successful albums to a new generation.

Which Gaga could've easily done, Judas' popularity had a MASSIVE surge because of TikTok, same for Bloody Mary and i'd argue TikTok edits CARRIED the popularity of DWAS outside of the fanbase and some older non-fans. Like I said before in a post; most of her longtime fans we've gone beyond the desire for her to be everywhere, selling lots of records or making a scene -- we just want her to make good music and be happy/healthy now. At least that's what I am like, and have seen people our age say.

Some younger fans YEARN for her to return to her commercial peak simply because they did not live through it.

Actually this isn’t really true. Most swifties are 30 years old white women that always had her back since day 1. Even when her albums are panned by critics and dragged by pop stans (like TTPD) you will notice how they still have genuine love and appreciation for that album. Exactly quite the opposite of what LMs does 🤣 I have been in many fanbases throughout the years and LMs are the worst by far in how they interact and treat gaga’s art lol

I think you're paying far too much mind to negative comments tbh, I genuinely just scroll on unless there's a point to argue. It's the internet, it's been like this since forums became a thing in the 90s.

Plus fandom is not a monolith. Not every fan is a die hard fan nor is every fan a casual who has no opinion, they intersect. I'm not a large Madonna fan (if a fan at all) but I still voice my opinions on her music -- because I can. Plus fandom alone can NOT make someone successful, casual fans, the general population and critics combined make success. Look at DWAS, the majority of the hardcore fandom does not care about the song at all, but it became the biggest song in the world BECAUSE of her other demographics.

Gaga sells out tours not just because of fans, but because casuals and gp members wanna see her sing her old hits, because they wanna witness her spectacle in person. I can tell you her stadiums and arenas would be half empty if it were hardcore fans only who bought tickets. You NEED all the cross over.

Comparing Britney’s level of creative control to Gaga’s is just unfair Britney spent nearly 15 years under a conservatorship and clearly never had the same freedom over her career or releases. So blaming her for every weaker album makes no sense when she wasn’t operating with the same autonomy. And when she did have more creative input, we got Blackout, which is literally one of the strongest albums of its genre.

I genuinely don’t care if pop stars produce their own music. They’re entertainers first , kinda like actors. Their whole job is about selling a fantasy. Britney was a pop star, and she was extremely good at being one.

And writing and producing your own music doesn’t automatically make it good either.

How does that contradict anything I said? She can genuinely love jazz and still use it as a safe exit and a form of damage control. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. Something can be personally authentic to her while also being a very convenient way to distance herself from the ARTPOP backlash and rebuild her image as a more “serious” and respectable artist.

Yes she has her older fans, but as I mentioned above replying to Bronco, she DOES have a large younger fanbase exclusively because she markets herself as younger, doesn't change her sound up much and because she re-released all of her older most successful albums to a new audience. Not everyone on the forum will have been a Gaga fan since 2008.

There's people i've seen on here who have said they were a child or barely even BORN when Gaga came out. We have fans who became fans THROUGH her jazz records and ASIB on here, we have people who may have discovered her in the pandemic. Gaga has generational differences in her fanbase and we all respond differently to her work.

If you didn’t then why are you having all these opinions about gaga’s production and songwriting then😭? She *was* good. Gaga is still is good and she makes her own music and write her own songs ( she wrote for Britney btw) and creates her own art while also playing instruments and singing live.

Because you are projecting your own trauma onto gaga atp… as i said she made it very clear she is far behind all that mess that happened during that era and the fact yall still discussing it is literally weird idk
