Gaga has become too safe.

Well she's a different person, to state the obvious. The 22 year old tearaway has been replaced by the mature 40 year old, a path trodden by billions.

Musically, yes, Mayhem is safe. She decided to write a bunch of cracking songs and put them all on an album. What could be safer than that ?

When Zombieboy finishes and LoveDrug kicks in I'm not thinking here's this safe, generic song again, I'm thinking here's this great song again, and then she comes in on that first verse and away we go.

Whatever you call it it’s still weird to try and over analyse something that was greatly received by everyone just so you could prove your point which is mostly negative point instead of just leave the work be greatly received and loved as it is

it’s not emulation it’s called inspiration 😭😭😭😭 every artist is inspired by other artists

Gaga always did this…. She wrote btw with Whitney Huston in mind

It was greatly received by me too, I love it, it's one of her best, but some things in art are objective :awkney: and girl, inspiration is one thing but when Michael Jackson could just pick up Shadow of a Man and record his vocals and put his ooh aah aahs and his moans on it and it would fit his discography, it's emulation, come on

I get that she is not controversial anymore. Does it make her safe as such? Not sure. Wouldn’t call Disease as a safe song or first single and who listened to it other than fans? Was Chromatica safe? She is highly sensitive and I think she doesn't want controversy or having to take sides in politics either as she used to (which nearly derailed Chromatica promo), she speaks of things that people identify with and about love and unity. That’s also influencing her writing imo.

Y’all need to stop acting like Gaga was ever on some experimental, avant-garde music level. She’s never been that unsafe or experimental when it comes to her music (ARTPOP was basic EDM)

Gaga’s image was weird. Her fashion was weird. Her performances were weird. But the actual music was usually very radio friendly, commercial, accessible, and relatively safe. And arguably, that contrast is exactly what made her so successful , she packaged genuinely bizarre, provocative visuals around music that was conventional and catchy enough for mass audiences

That’s always been the disconnect with Gaga: the music rarely reflected just how bizarre and transgressive she presented herself as being

And whenever she moves away from glossy electropop for gays, we get Joanne, the jazz records, or Joker stuff that sounds like upscale soccer mom music... :billie:

tbh it’s kinda unfair to say her music was never unconventional like she was releasing songs like Born This Way, Hair, Judas, Aura, Venus in a time we were getting albums like Katy’s Teenage Dream/PRISM and Britney’s Femme Fatale and a bunch of truly generic Rihanna albums

Ofc she’s not a Bjork by any means and her music is still pop to the core but she has always had an experimental point of view in most of her music

We can still say the same till this day tho…? She released songs like abracadabra disease and killah while other popstars are releasing generic pop ( showgirl, man’s best friend 143.. etc)

dude when she doesnt make electropop for gay clubs she makes jazz and soccer mom and boomer music like joanne and that tony bennett album , how is that musically risky?

God forbid a talented woman does what she is passionate about

Also this soccer mom boomer album you talk about has songs about masturbation, police brutality/gun violence. You might not like the album but that doesn't make it a basic album. It explores different sonorities and even if it didn't... it was a decade ago. And yes, it was risky. It was a complete departure pf her sound and style, not just the album but the whole era. She could have alienated every fan, confused the general public and never recover popularity/sales wise but she did anyway.

She continues to reinvent herself album after album and it's not her fault some fans throw a fit when a person with her own mind and free will doesn't act exactly as they want her to.

You like the fat girl I got in me 🍕

The dead dance, shadow of a man, zombie boy, don’t call tonight could’ve been on Future nostalgia

Some of the songs could’ve been on Miley Cyrus plastic hearts

How bad do you want me could’ve been on 1989 sorry I know that’s way beyond only the last 5 years lol honestly don’t call tonight could’ve been on that album too

so ok there’s 3 albums well over last 5 years

look all I’m saying is mayhem doesn’t bring anything new to the table ok and for the last 10 years Gaga been SAFE and often rap into genericland

Future Nostalgia is more like Moroder’s later work whereas Mayhem is more like Nile Rodgers’ early work.

Gaga’s comes from the jazz guitar-come-rock n roll-bass style disco that Nile pioneered and follows almost ALL his techniques (to the point I dunno why she didn’t get him to produce on the album). Dua’s is a phaser-frequency bounce heavy SYNTH powered almost 80s disco moment. Also Gaga’s is far more funk and Dua’s is synthpop essentially.

TLDR; Gaga’s brand of disco has it’s roots in jazz and rock, Dua’s is literally just 80s synthpop with a funky bass.

I don't think Lady Gaga is playing it safe; she's simply more mature and calmer these days.

She's still Lady Gaga—there will always be a little twist to her looks. She's been around for 20 years—how do you expect her to surprise the audience when she's already done everything she's done over the past 20 years?

The only area where she’s playing it safe is in her lyrics, which aren’t as socially conscious or profound as they used to be. Some of the songs from the Mayhem session sound safe, like Shape Of A Woman or The Dead Dance.

But I think she needed to prove to herself that she was capable of it—it had been years since she’d made songs in that style.

And even if she’s playing it safe—as many people might think—I’ll always be just as big fan of this woman who’s done so much for us. And to be honest, I’d rather have a safe and happy Gaga than a Gaga who goes to extremes and is completely miserable + on drugs (hello ARTPOP).

I think Mayhem was the first time she ever tried to appeal to everyone at the same time, which I guess could make it safer in many ways. At least it’s not losing quality.

You should actually keep this energy for people saying bs like they haven’t “connected “ with gaga for years instead because why are THEY are still here? They’re ruining everything for everyone else

I 100% agree with this. Honestly, there is so much underlying frustration, disappointment and resentment in some of ya'll towards Gaga and it reads so clearly in your posts. You can call it healthy discourse but I think it's quite clear some people have just become critics who enjoy the social element of the site.

That definitely would ruin it for the people who think highly of Gaga and want to go somewhere to kind of celebrate that (i.e a fansite) - Nobody expects a mind-vacuumed, dystopian *Gaga is perfect in all she does* atmosphere, but you can tell when some people dislike far too many things about someone to have any place on their fan site. Like respectfully, move on

to be fair, this has been partially true for YEARS, i've been active on this site for over a decade as a user and more as just a reader -- and there's many long standing members on here now who are self professed Gaga casuals now compared to how they used to be and love other artists more -- I think that's fine personally. Not everything she does is gonna please everyone and we need views from all sides.

For example I absolutely LOVED Runway, but many people i love and respect on the site did not and some of those people called it "slop" and it's ok for us to have our differences of opinion and levels of fandom.

It's ok to have some casuals on here who want her to make nothing but TFM over and over again, equally it's ok for members who love everything she does at all -- as well as those of us who are a mix of both. Plus the site isn't remotely as active as it was back in the GagaBoards days nor the early Forum days, so you WILL see some members who are active more posting more whether their opinion is negative or positive.

Yeah I agree with that, but you’re also picking the most generic lowest-common-denominator comparisons possible... Like anything is better than katy perry.

I already said elsewhere on my profile that Gaga’s electropop songs had a noticeably darker, more gothic undertone in the melodies, harmonies and overall composition to them

Compare her electropop hits to what Katy, Kesha LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Rihanna etc were doing at the same time. Gaga’s songs often had this slightly sinister, ominous vibe underneath all the glossy club production. There was simply more atmosphere and depth to gaga's music.

But that still doesn’t magically make the music unconventional imo. Gaga is a mainstream pop star signed to a major label, at the end of the day, the music still has to sell. you’re selling a product, and that product is the music.

You can have darker, stranger, more niche influences and still package them into something deliberately accessible and commercial. that’s not the same thing as actually making truly like, weird, unconventional music.

And also i don’t really agree with what you said about Britney and Femme Fatale either. I don’t see how albums like The Fame, ARTPOP or Chromatica are inherently more “experimental” than Femme Fatale just because Gaga has a more avant-garde image attached to her.

Femme Fatale had genuinely weird, left-field pop moments like “How I Roll” that played with unusual production choices while still functioning as mainstream pop. I think people sometimes confuse experimental aesthetics and branding with the music itself actually being more experimental.

Yeah I agree with all of that, but there's like 3 or 4 very active users I can guarantee Gaga would block instantly if she had control of the site for the day :icant:
