Here in the UK the national charity there to support asylum seekers is conveniently funded by the Home Office, trying to get them out, so there is very little 'help' for them in spite of the sensationalist media claims. It’s estimated that roughly 69% of undocumented immigrants (ie the overwhelming majority) are actively employed, pay taxes, and are largely ineligible for the benefits those taxes fund. For example, undocumented immigrants pay at least $26B into Social Security every year and are ineligible for enrollment in the program. Same with Medicare. And, expanding beyond the US, data shows at least 56% of refugees across Europe are employed and 68% of migrants in general are also employed, so the idea that they are lazy and leeching off the system basically anywhere in the western world is just…not borne out meaningfully in any data. Cause I live in Spain and even tho we kind of have the same situation with some certain groups of immigrants (again, some specific people, cause the vast majority of them make a living out of hard work and dignity), I'd never say it's our biggest issue or a national problem. Rich people making impossible to afford a house is, for example. I’ve just never really understood how people bought into any version of the “welfare queen” argument about any class of people because that class of people just…largely doesn’t exist. Most recipients of social welfare across the western world are only on it temporarily between employment and there’s basically no group or class of people that has ever become totally welfare dependent.
