compared to some singers who never write their own songs or lack the talent to do so, and instead just buy works from other songwriters, GAGA is already highly talented in her songwriting ; her gifts are truly multifaceted.

she creates every single one of her songs, even though it's impossible for every track to be a masterpiece. while her lyrics might not be as poetic as taylor swift's, at least she doesnt write songs to clap back at her exes or drop subtle shade 

if GAGA's songwriting abilities were define as mediocre, how would people describe rihanna, beyoncé or britney spears lol?

She has her hits and misses is the perfect answer. 

I think her biggest issue sometimes is not that she's a mediocre songwriter, but rather she can sometimes be a bit of a lazy one. When she's really locked in, she makes magic, but sometimes she seems to accept a song that really could use another pass or two.

She has both great lyrics and some cringy ones.

I think this part for example is something more deep than other lyrics we have seen from her

She's not mediocre in the slightest. But she's not consistent and never has been. 

She likes to play with genres too much to be consistent tbh. 

The most consistent song writers like Steinman, Taupin etc are all very firmly based in specific styles. Gaga would get bored.

I think it really depends on what criteria you define as “good” songwriting. Because a lot of pop fans (now especially) think that the fancier the lyrics or the more literal their meaning; the better they are.

If that’s the case then some people must think she’s a terrible songwriter because she always deals in metaphors. Which is why Brooklyn Nights is one of her standout unreleased songs because it deals in literalistic lyrical content, the entire opposite of what her usual style is.

I personally prefer her songwriting to say, Taylor Swift who is far too literal to the point it pains me. Gaga’s lyrics are more interpretive and I much prefer that.

Swifties who like to mock any other popstars songwritings don’t understand that songwritings just like litterature, can belong to various many genres.

Make them read a play by Shakespeare, then a classical novel like Faust, then make them read a post-modern book by Duras... They couldn’t get it cause they parrots, they like Taylor's songwritings bc the critics told them so.

Gaga's style is designed to create pulsative beats based on words and feelings. That’s what Dance music is meant to, and that’s what Madonna explains in Confession II. Gaga borrows many references too (there isn’t only TayTay who can do that loool). And sometimes she can speak about personal experiences too in a more sober way like on "You and I".

 

It’s in The Fame that Gaga starts to use her fav thing in life onomatopeias and stuttering. It creates great melodies and memorable ones. TFM without "Rah-Rah" wouldn’t be the same.

 

Chromatica's songwriting is great because it mimics the way ppl with ptsd can speak under stress. There are some phrases that are shorts, not fully articulated but honests... Her metaphors express euphemisms of very crude realities "keep my dolls inside the box" for litteral medications.

 

ARTPOP is very post-modern with all it’s references and contain some damn poetic lines. It’s focused on love. It’s her best lyrics imo. The whole ARTPOP song is like a performance about how she takes her inspo. It’s theatrical and supported by a voice who can produce many performative effects :

"Free my mind ARTPOP

You make my heart stop"

Even Aura sounds so cool because she mixes yet cosmical ideas and very incarnated themes. Again it’s performative, theatrical :

"Do you wanna see me naked lover

Do you want to peak underneath the bed cover

Do you want to see the girl who lives behind the aura"

"We're both convicted criminals of thoughts" on X Dreams was a ref to Orwell's universe in 1984.

 

Mayhem might be her most cohesive one in term of lyrics. The themes are repeating itselves because the whole album is haunted. Some words are repeated often times like "Dry", "Kill/killah", "Dance", etc... It’s because there is a whole storyline here because of the fears she has. It’s really like in goth litterature. There is a double. This double appears on the album cover and they twist the knives :

There is a knive. Don’t Call Tonight mentions it. Most of the time, she talks about her. This part of herself that is red (yeah the lady in Red) that ends up being fusionned to the lady in white to become black when the alchemical conflict is finished. It really follows how Gaga's identity became split at some point of her life and how it is cyclical (like she explained when she dropped Disease).

 

You know why some Swifties do mock Gaga's songwriting ? Because it’s not prude. Because she uses crudes images or expressions, sometimes even very Sorry but if the artist must be prude, how can Gaga give birth to such an amazing monsters in her discography ?

Gagas song writing is best when its personal experience played through a lens of a crude, artistic portrait. 

Most of her discography is just that.

Where she falls off for me is that sometimes the poetry is a bit cringe or the words too clunky and its usually in projects you can tell she hasnt put her all into. Its not often, but she misses sometimes.
