Albums with a misleading title/image/sound

Oh when it comes to titles, I will say that one of the most disappointing things in recent pop culture is Gracie's Daughter from hell, WHAT DO YOU MEAN SUCH AN EPIC TITLE WENT TO SUCH A BORING NOTHING BURGER OF AN ALBUM?!?!?!?!?!

Well that is mostly true so I don't really disagree but that doesn't change the fact that Mayhem was very misleading in both sound and visuals (album cover, album photoshoot, promo images etc)

Weirdly enough, the best review I’ve ever read for ARTPOP that made it made sense was in an Amazon review section and called it a triptych of obsessions. Sex, fame, and material things. And the album is kind of divided that way. Idk if that was Gaga’s intention but I think it actually makes the album make a lot of sense with how she also early on said she wanted it to have a lack of responsibility, etc. And so it’s a sleazy album celebrating obsessions like you ride out the coke high of TF by smoking weed. The title, they said, then served as a meta commentary on her own work and what it had become.

Eh, I think the head fake was intentional marketing and the contrast between sound and aesthetic was deliberate (as opposed to ARTPOP, which is basically all ad hoc). But to each their own

So you are saying that Gaga intentionally mismarketed the album and created a deliberate mismatch between visuals and sound of the album? For what? There is a difference between intentional chaos and a mismatch also and by this logic could one not say that she did the same thing with ARTPOP and she is a genius for that too? I feel like people just use the fact that it is called "Mayhem" as an excuse for the poor marketing or lack of cohesion tbh. Like say Gaga made Mayhem as an album where each song is completely different in genre and extremely all over the place like one is Jazz the next is country the next is trap the next is hyper pop and not as in pop with that genre mixed in but each one dives fully into that genre, sure that would be chaotic but it would be extremely incohesive and messy.

Ns to her but I think this is why she called it Mayhem (to have plausible cover lol). Methinks **** was kinda a mess of indecisions until they clicked with the vision for Abracadabra

Nope, never said that. I said she wanted to generate discourse about a “return to form era” and she explicitly stated during the post-Disease pre-album cycle that “people are going to think they know where this album is going based on the first few songs, then it takes a turn half way through,” so I think it’s fair to say she was fully aware that people thought it was going to be a full dark pop record and leaned into those curated expectations to ultimately subvert them.

I’d say she fine tuned what she attempted to do with the messaging surrounding ARTPOP on MAYHEM. The MAYHEM era, as meta commentary, owns the idea that she doesn’t have to be solely one thing as its central ethos. And even though that was probably the strongest and most coherent aspect of the ARTPOP era and messenging, she endlessly diluted that message by cramming in a bunch of secondary cultural critique (“reverse Warholian expedition,” “intersection of ART and POP culture” etc.). that didn’t do much to reinforce the album’s most salient theme.
