Think of it like Abra and Disease, whereas Abra was more successful than the latter, both songs were equally energetic and equally felt like hits and satisfied the "an album should have hits" expectation. I feel in this sense Give Me All Your Luvin' is a hit, too. I feel like they’re two sides of the same coin: one is about tearing down the scrutiny and discourse surrounding her legacy as an artist to connect with her audience, the other is about a more deep seated vulnerability/connection. I've seen people compare it to Miles Away, Time Stood Still, and Masterpiece and I completely agree. I also love Everything because it feels like a journey with the different mix of genres in the song at different points. I don't listen to Madonna often and the only other album of hers I've ever listened to in full is Ray Of Light, which didn't reallly stick with me. For Confessions II I really just wanted to see what the hype is about. I really like the second half of the album. The run of Bizarre - School - Fragile - My Sins - Betrayal is AMAZING. The strongest point of the album is definitely the production and I can only critique one or two tracks on that front. I also love the overal thematic direction, even though it can be a bit one-note. My main critique would be the vocals, both in terms of delivery and vocal production. Her voice sounds quite thin throughout the album and it can't quite keep up with the energy of the songs. Especially in the first half of the album. They're also quite overproduced to the point of sounding either muddy or like a different person entirely - and not in a creative/intentional way. It weighs down songs that are otherwise great. But at the same time some songs solve the issue brilliantly by relying on good vocal harmonies or deliberate stylizing. I’d probably give it like 7.7-8 just bc the production is *so* good and I think it’s obviously the lead of the album. Unfortunately, nothing else was quite as good as that. My other faves were Good For The Soul, Everything, School, Fragile, Betrayal and Hot Sauce. Sone tracks felt like a mix of Confessions and Ray of Light and she was doing her own thing instead of chasing trends this time which I can really appreciate. But just like the original Confessions, I found a lot of it underpar and bland. I don't know why so many people are raving over LES Girl and saying it made then cry. If she wanted to make a vulnerable track about her old self, I felt it could be more revealing. I Feel So Free is the most Confessions 1 song, like she starts part 2 with a little bit of that sound. The rest of the album does feel like she was inspired by her entire discography. Like she goes from Ray of Light and Music to Erotica/Bedtime Stories, a little bit of Madame X / American Life and even MDNA with little winks to her singles from the 80’s in Danceteria.
