i actually found it edgy and cool, I love weirdness.. but maybe it's her voice which kind of annoys me I guess..

But in my defense, I listened to PORTALS first and it's like considered as a very challenging album I think

Yeah, I love the practical sounds! She and her producers actually create a lot of them!

Ooh.. Yeah, that'll do it. Portals is part 3 of the Cry Baby trilogy so it's honestly best to start from the beginning lol Her sound evolves which each project and Portals is definitely a departure from her first two albums.

So, to summarize poorly, Cry Baby - PORTALS is a the telling of her fictional character who essentially lives in a wacky world where magic exists, et cetera lol.

Spoiler

This is all from the top of my head but I'm also super tired right now :messga: please forgive me in advance

In Cry Baby we're told the story of her (character, not Melanie) troubled childhood. Melanie uses childhood topics as metaphors for experiences you'd even deal with as an adult. For example, in Dollhouse and Sippy Cup we find out that Cry Baby lives in a very broken home. But these songs also explore topics like cheating and alcoholism. There's a music video for every Cry Baby song that tells her story visually!

In K-12 (adolescence) she continues the usage of childhood topics as metaphors but this time we explore Cry Baby's life throughout school, quite literally from K-12. There's a K-12 movie on her channel that also continues her story picking up from Cry Baby!

After School EP -- I'm not sure that After School is necessarily connected to the story, I believe melanie said that the lyrics are less about Cry Baby a little more just from herself. For example, numbers is about the music industry chewing and spitting people out, which makes no sense in the cry baby universe. It's definitely worth a listen, I believe she said it acts as a bridge between K-12 and PORTALS sonically and lyrically. You definitely hear it.

Finally with PORTALS, we witness the death and rebirth of Cry Baby and watch her new form navigate the new mythical world she now lives in. Unfortunately we didn't get a music video for every song, and the planned second movie was also scrapped. But about half the album got music videos! And thus ends the trilogy.

HADES isn't connected to Cry Baby but is instead about a new character named Circle who, if my memory serves me correctly, lives in a very dystopian world ran by AI when she's taken from a small number of people who live without technology(?) and is forced to be the example as to why AI is good because humans make mistakes and cause issues. idk my brain is fried right now. :air: she explained it in the HADES teaser video

TL;DR Cry Baby & K-12 do use topics and references to childhood and childlike things but they're used as metaphors for serious topics that are more adult-centric like infidelity, addiction, violence, etc.

I'll just say that Melanie likes to have at least one "taboo" song on each album because she wants to bring attention to those topics. Like Mrs. Potato Head is about plastic surgery (she's not bashing it), K-12 has a couple but I'd say Teacher's Pet is the most extreme one as its about a teacher grooming a student. Just a heads up

WAIT WHAT??

How did I miss this?

What event is she performing at here??

The lip readers were right, it IS Elysium :laughga:

I she still doing the Hades movie or no? Because I wasn't expecting Elysium until next year (given that she's doing a semi-world tour soon) so now I'm confused. Please say we don't have MORE scrapped visuals :smh:  the whole reason she wasn't doing music videos is because we were supposed to get a movie

Maybe the movie will be both Hades and Elysium.. if so I hope it's 4 hours long :laughga:

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

that's interesting, I love this kind of statement, Lilly Allen tried to do it with Sheezus but it didn't land well because she came from a humor pov, so it failed to deliver the statement.

Crybaby is definitely her most pop adjacent album. I didn’t like her at first when I heard dollhouse/pity party but one day it just clicked

Yes, it's the third part. She was alread, kinda teasing it at the end of the K-12 film where they exit the school scene during a portal emerging from the ground

Rumour has it the album will come out this year and if I remember correctly she herself said something like putting out two albums this year.

I would love a Hades film! Listening to it already feels like "watching" a dystopian musical in your head. But the budget is as always  a problem, she also shelved visual stuff for Portals to save up for Hades.

Maybe that's why the tour is rather short (only 25 dates), because there will be more to follow.
