Bronco 25,408 Posted June 19 Share Posted June 19 (edited) As of roughly 3am (BST) this morning, the man widely seen as the primary threat to Kier Starmer's time as Primeminister was officially elected to Parliament making him eligible to challenge Kier Starmer. Former Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, won a by-election called after Kier Starmer saw the Labour party lose thousands of local government councillors in May's local elections which prompted close to a 100 MPs to call on Starmer to resign. Burnham won the by-election resoundingly with 54% of the vote on a 65% turnout. The Ashton in Makerfield by-election was the first one since the 80s to see turnout higher than in the previous general election. Most importantly, Burnham increased the Labour majority in this seat winning an additional 10% of the vote compared with the 2024 general election result. The by-election also proved Burnham's brand and his argument that his politics (dubbed "manchesterism) can beat off the far-right Reform party. However, PM Kier Starmer has this morning refused to resign or agree to an orderly transition with Burnham replacing him. Instead, he has vowed to fight any labour leadership challenge triggered (he would automatically be on the ballot as the incumbent) and is currently phoning existing cabinet ministers asking them to pledge loyalty or face the sack. Burnham & his allies are hoping to use the weekend to persuade Starmer to go with dignity rather than in a bloody fight he is widely seen as guaranteed to lose. Its inevitable Starmer goes (every poll has him losing in an actual membership ballot). Starmer has consistently trended down on the opinion polls monthly since his first month in office. Most unpopular PM in my lifetime according to the data. The social contracts got destroyed. Housing is increasingly short supply. The cost of living is perpetually rising etc. People have waited close to 20 years at this point for government's to fix it and they've refused. And it is causing significant instability.
