I also donāt necessarily think having a recognizable style is a huge issue and you could say the same is true of MJ, tbh I think MJ had the benefit of growing up into stardom so he wound up having a few distinct eras of sound: Motown, Disco/Pop/Funk, Rock/RnB/Pop. Iām not saying this was all some visionary quality of his (he famously rejected the idea of hip hop taking off, mind you), but kinda just happened bc he went from kid to teen to man. Sign Oā The Times is def unique and thatās why it stands out a lot! I just think for Prince sometimes having that distinct style could hamper his songwriting from the usual tropes or sounds and so while almost never *bad* it would get a bit expected which can be hard for pop music. Michael definitely had this, too, from Bad to Dangerous imo. Invincible feels like he started finally breaking from his rut of near meme affectations. To that end, though, I think thatās why Prince is so beloved by music nerds bc his technicality and detailed craftsmanship gets more appreciated there than in a pop commercial radio sphere that might simply Ā say, āyeah it sounds like Prince.ā
