Oh, I wasn't implying a DSA member should be the candidate; I'm saying the DSA is more favorable than ever among the party, so now is the time to run progressive candidate as opposed to one that would be labeled moderate conservative almost anywhere besides America like all of the DNC-backed candidates of the past.

I would prefer AOC to run for Schumer's seat. As great of a movement voice she is, she's not really an accomplished congresswoman. She ranks extremely low in effectiveness legislatively.

Newsom is leagues above her in that regard and I'd rather someone get elected and do the work than sound good.

The DSA and other progressives have a real shot at changing congress and state wide offices but the presidency should be nowhere on their radar.

Almost guaranteed. The Republican party is fractured because of Trump. These are the three most likely GOP candidates so far and why they wouldn't win:

JD Vance: Just as Harris had to own Biden's presidency, Vance has to own Trump's and Trump has historically low approval. He'd also be required to take a stance - does he "betray" Trump and admit they've made mistakes, therefore losing the MAGA crowd? Or does he stand by Trump and lose the America first crowd? He has virtually no shot at winning.

Marco Rubio: He gets a small boost for being seen as "the adult in the room" but as part of this administration, he still owns all the faults and mistakes. He'd do better among Republicans but he wouldn't get enough Independent support to actually win unless he's against someone as weak as AOC.

Ron DeSantis: Lmao. Just lmao. Everybody hates this guy, he's extremely unlikable and by 2028 he'll have been out of office here in Florida for two years. That time out of the public's eye will just make his unlikability even more jarring if he decides to run again.

The problem we're encountering as a nation is that our institutions themselves continue to favor Republicans more and more with every election. Electoral college power in blue states shrinks with every census and grows in red states, the senate overwhelmingly overrepresents rural states (30% of the population gets roughly 70% of the power in senate), and now with the voting rights act being gutted and gerrymandering going insane in red states basically any Democrat elected president is almost guaranteed to have at least one chamber of congress controlled by Republicans who will do everything they can to block their agenda and even if they get things passed, the conservative supreme court will strike it down if they can.

The US is basically cooked tbh.

That's why every serious Democrat now is saying we need a better system rather than just rebuilding what Trump has destroyed. It's literally impossible but this is what needs to happen:

1) Expand the SCOTUS to 13 seats

2) Ban gerrymandering in every state, appoint independent bodies to draw districts for the house of representatives

3) abolish the senate entirely

4) abolish the electoral college

5) overturn Citizens United and ban federal representatives from owning any kind of investments or benefiting from them in any way

6) create some kind of independent corruption network and empower them to remove power from representatives at every level should conflicts of interest and duty be found

Problem solved.

But that'll never happen.

I need to give the DSA more grace. They were such a hot mess when I checked them out a decade ago. It was like, a space where frustrated intellectuals (and many, many dummies) went to vent their frustrations and then go home and be complacent with the political state of the country. There was no leadership or real sense of purpose. There’s no way they haven’t improved since then.

I haven't really checked in much but I do know they heavily backed Mamdani in New York and the plan was to see how their candidates did this year and based on that, they'd plot statewide moves for 2028 and beyond, including pushing AOC for the senate (even though she's a Democrat) against Mr. Israel-First.

If that is indeed the plan, that's the most sound way to actually get a progressive option nationally one day. None of these Green party spoiler candidate losers who hold 11 tiny offices but still pull millions of votes from Democrats in every presidential election  

Ah speaking of, I forgot to add rank choice voting to my little list above.

The way fauxgressives and DSA have completely infiltrated the Democratic Party and their only goal is to destroy the party, if real Dems don’t rally early behind a candidate, we’ll probably end up with Maureen Galindo or some other Nazi as the nominee.

AOC is amazing but for the sake of where this country is, she isn't ready to be put out as a candidate. Newsom has potential and I think could be someone to help get the country pointed in the right direction, but I still don't have faith he could succeed because we still have too many idiots in this country.

We need a miracle honestly... because as much as we want to move forward, people need to understand its going to take time and multiple steps to get there as a nation. Sorry if that sounds pessimistic but it is what I view as the objective truth of this situation

I thought I remembered the DSA having bad blood with AOC over some semantics. I think they hated that she sided with Nancy Pelosi on something. Idk my mind is foggy but it’s a good sign that they’ve gotten over their purist mindset and realized she reads as genuine and can be an asset when supported instead of vilified. 
 

TBH I don’t know if the senate seat is attainable for AOC. NYC has enclaves of very liberal neighborhoods but at the state level there will be much more conservative voters heading to the polls.  The way I see it, Schumer’s seat will go to someone a little more palatable for suburban New Yorkers. As crazy as this sounds, I think her future in politics would benefit from a presidential run. She may not win the nomination, but if she energizes enough people (which I sincerely think she can) she could leverage that into a cabinet position and “live to fight another day.” Whereas if she loses in New York at the state level her career could be over. It’s a tough gamble for her. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for someone still very young.
