For those that know the series, lets talk about the sheer terror this massive villan has.

- Trillions of drones

- 1 single big ship can destroy entire fleets of even advanced species

- At least thousands of Cubes (each 28 km cubed or about 3km long in each direction

- thousands of light years of space

- virtually unstopable

I know nothing about Star trek, but I'm curious...

were you inspired to post this thread because of the new Madonna visuals?

The borg were exceptionally horrific because we knew almost nothing about them, but now after multiple series and movies they've lost a bit of that "unknown" quality that made them so scary back in the day. But I still remember being shook w/ Picard throughout Next Generation

I remember the borg in Star Trek The Next Generation were less scary than in Star Trek Voyager. They got a real revamp lol but we can explain that away that Voyager was more in the future so maybe their tech just changed and thats why the borg look different :ladyhaha:

One fascinating concept debate i been into lately is the Borg Queen. She says she IS the borg and IS the collective yet often talks like shes an individual and gives orders to the borg to counteract what they were going to do which may seem contradictory

but i have a theory about that :ladyhaha:

Yea the borg queen never really made sense, they were trying to go for an insect vibe but queens in a hive don’t actually run anything, they’re just handmaids tales

Soooooo the borg are supposed to be one hive mind right? In Star Trek First Contact the Queen herself says "I am the borg" data asks her to clarify the working relationship and she says again "you imply disparity where there is none, I am the collective"

Yet on Star Trek Voyager you see her give orders contrary to the collective. The collective says "vessel identified USS voyager, we will pursue and assimilate" and the Queen Says "no, They havent compromised our security, let the vessle continue for now, Ill keep an eye on them". She also has given hand gestures to drones before to stop or go etc.

But data did learn that the borg has automated functions when he was linked with the assimilated Picard. They have protocols they follow almost programed and on autopilot.

What if the collective do much of their thinking on semi autopiliot (kind of like a human can do common tasks like driving home the same commute on autopilot) and the Queen is like a representation of their more conscious mind?

Sometimes we do things as routine without thinking then our conscious mind takes over and does something else when we think something thru. For example, subconscious mind on auto piliot can drive home in that same route every day, but then conscious mind notices gas tank is low and stops you from making the usual turn because you have to go fill up gas instead. Both aspects of your mind are both you just the same, but your conscious mind can overpower your subconscious mind on autopiliot when you make a conscious decision

The borg consciousness hive mind may largely function day to day on autopiliot through their usual protocols but unique circumstances may cause them to think more consciously. The Borg Queen as a physical representation of the borg may represent their active mind making conscious decisions and debating with itself

This would solve the aparent contradiction that she is the borg yet at times seems to outright command them and tell the drones to do something else other than what they were going to do. Conscious mind is basically saying no, the usual autopiliot protocol wont work here

I love this, it makes sense. I mean it takes time for our brains to send signals to our bodies --- the Borg could be looked at metaphoric body. If the Queen is where the conscious and deciscion making are centered, it would take time for any thing she decides to reach the rest of the Borg. A visual cue might actually be a quick way for the "body" of the borg to think and move and such.

Yep. Could see her almost like a specific part of the brain for higher brain function and thought/decision making but the collective as a whole the general brain (which she would still be a part of)
