what could they have done differently for Chromatica's success?

Probably utilise the existing promo and once the pandemic had settled a lot they could’ve gave it a proper era.

We know for a fact from Bobby’s own words and her legal doc leak that they had produced a mega promo plan akin to Born This Way’s, most of which got recycled for Mayhem. But in hindsight if those delays and cancellations never happened then Mayhem probably wouldn’t have had so much great promo.

HOWEVER, the era and album was a success. It was #1 and the biggest album of the year, it (at the time) was her highest critically acclaimed album, it produced a #1 song and won a GRAMMY. She also went on a massive world tour that in the end reinvigorated her need to make pop music again.

Chromanne

More than Chromatica, I think Rain On Me has more chance of resurgence in future. It's already a hit single featuring Ariana and may get more flowers in the future as Gaga's catalogue strengthens more in streams.

Chromatica is a good house music album and I really loved when it was realised however Gaga wasn't at the right mind at that time, Bloodpop literally had to force her to record music. From the production credits I could tell that Gaga wasn't really involved much in the production of the album, it was rather a Bloodpop album sonically and was "too cohesive" when compared to other Gaga albums. But the album had a lot of potential to have numerous singles and I hope Gaga revisits the album more often so that songs like Replay and 911 can have their Government Hooker or Heavy Metal Lover moment.

Will Chromatica ever get the justice it needs?

Of course. I thought I would never like JazzGa, but as I've aged and matured like a good wine, I've realized how absolutely good the albums are. Chromatica is very poppy and sad, with hints of depression, such as ARTPOP is. Both albums have their ups and downs, such as jewels and drugs and plastic doll, but that doesn't fully discard them.

Horny Chicken

Chromatica is appreciated by LM’s on Reddit and the straights so it’s really just GGD. :oprah:

Music being liked by the straights is a bad thing though.

actually that would be you sister, the real world is indifferent to chromatica

to say it's widely disliked as ARTPOP was is completely false

it's only here that has a strong negative reaction to chromatica

Album got largely positive reviews 🤷

Of course the album for great reviews, it came right after ASIB, she’s now got that Beyoncé-like status where you cannot really criticize their work

They were still maaaaany fans (not speaking about stand) who were really disappointed by Chromatica

I did not say nor imply it was as debated as ARTPOP. That one was far from perfect by the way, but what happened to it on a global scale is the total opposite of what happened to Chromatica. It got severely rejected by the media and public because people wanted to see her fail

chewing on pearls

I think the Sine From Above > 1000 Doves > Babylon closing progression on this album is really special tbh, it tells you a lot about what Gaga was experiencing at the time. I love dance music that has dark/emotional lyrics, and it meant a lot to me when it dropped in 2020!

Not to mention – it sometimes seems like the same monsters who were upset that MAYHEM "wasn't cohesive" are the ones who thought Chromatica was "generic". In my view, MAYHEM has more sonic variation than Chromatica, but Chromatica has somewhat more narrative depth across the songs.

We've been talking about doing a series of episodes on the podcast talking about the connection between MAYHEM and Chromatica. I think when MAYHEM is a few years old, the relationship between those projects will be really important to the story of Gaga's music career!
