Alberta Premier On Alberta Seperatism From Canada, 1st Referendum OCT 19th

I wonder how long this will go on for. The 1st referendum will be on October 19th. However this referendum is to determine whether to have an official referendum. So basically a referendum of whether or not to have a referendum

Shes not entirely for it but shes flirting with the idea because most separatists are from her party so shes probably just playing to her base. It is estimated only 25% to 30% of Albertans favour separating but most who do are Conservatives (which is her party). To be fair though, that is probbaly the highest number of separatists outside of Quebec

 

And agree on consequences. Alberta may be Canadas richest Province but if it separated it wouldn't just be economic gains. I have had some arguments with Alberta separatists and they always mention not having to share tax revenue or being able to cut back on environmental regulations.

 

But they completely ignore that Alberta would be a landlocked Country. While not impossible to succeed, it is nevertheless a major disadvantage. I also find it funny they blame Canada and BC especially for getting in the way of infrastructure projects like pipelines but if they seperated that would actually make that issue even worse. If BC throws roadblocks in the way now, what incentive would it have to co=operate on Alberta infrastructure when it isn't even in the same Nation? Then it would really have no obgligations. Its like they do use common sense. They see a perceived issue created by Canada but then don't actually think it through if that issue would even improve should they leave (it wouldn't, it would get worse)

 

The only real benefit would be more tax revenue for themselves but even that is short term thinking. They are rich primarily because of oil and it is not clear for how many more years that will be a highly lucrative business. If they seperate, even if they manage to handle and solve all the logisticals disadvantages and challenges of being landlocked and having a small population (only 5 million), they may find they will still regret leaving Canada if in 20 years Oil fails as an industry. They are not investing enough into their heritage fund like Norway is to make up for it with future dividends because every few years they keep dipping into it

Ive hated her guts ever since she tried to have Alberta take 53% of Canada's CPP fund. Like wtf that was a literal attempt at robbery and some of the shottiest math I have ever seen to arrive at those numbers

 

I deduct into my CPP like every other working Canadian for my retirement and her trying to take 53% for her Province was a literal insult

do u think that the idea of separation is inevitable? that in the future the idea of a 'country' as we know it will die and cities will become independent? 

I mean this Alberta reasons are dumb, but hypothetically, in a different universe, if Quebec would like to separate because they feel too different culturally and not "Canadian" would separation be bad if this is what they want? 

I'm still on the fence about this, on one hand I believe about freedom to anyone who's looking for it and the 'country' is a bad and irrelevant concept, but at the same time, it would have so many bad consequences that it's not worth the fuss.

I mean im a firm believer Canada is stronger together period... but...

 

Between Alberta and Quebec... at least Quebec could make some sence... different language. And they are at the edge and also have water access etc

 

Alberta would be landlocked inside Canada making it harder on themselves plus their reasons are kinda dumb

 

So in Albertas case it makes so sense at all. But its not likely anyway. Despite the movement picking up, still only about 30% at most of Albertans wanna seperate. While an alarming number in terms of unity, its highly unlikely to ever pass or vote in favour of separation
