Axios: AOC undecided, but making 2028 moves

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she hasn't decided whether to run for president, but the New York congresswoman is making new moves toward a possible White House bid.

Just in May, Ocasio-Cortez has:

Rallied voters in Philadelphia for a left-wing congressional candidate in a competitive primary.

Spoken at a rally in Montgomery, Ala., about voting rights.

Addressed the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock. (Democrats note that Warnock, the church's senior pastor, doesn't always allow visiting politicians to speak at this church. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg didn't speak when he visited in March.)

Met with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter at the King Center in Atlanta to talk about data centers and voting rights.

Visited Morehouse School of Medicine, also in Atlanta, to discuss Black maternal health.

Rolled out several endorsements in races across the country.

This week, Ocasio-Cortez will travel to Missoula, Mont., to campaign for congressional candidate Sam Forstag, a smokejumper and union leader who spoke at a rally with AOC and Sanders last year.

AOC also has raised eyebrows by attending meetings with Democratic Party powerbrokers.

A person close to AOC told Axios that she is still genuinely undecided on whether to run for president. She's also considering a Senate bid in 2028.

She's young, of Puerto Rican descent and a woman: she doesn't stand a chance in 2028. Assuming of course there are actually elections then.

I love her but it's too early in her career.

The US is a backwards country and I don't think she is electable nationwide.

She is better off helping local candidates around the country getting elected so Dems can keep majorities in the House and Senate.

She doesn't stand a chance, but being in the race would force the Dems centre-left instead of centre-meh.

I think the sad reality of politics now is you, people have showed their asses (as voters) and you have to be a centrist or a right leaning centrist to win after Trump honestly. He's radicalised the right so much they will NOT accept a left wing leader nor vote for one, but leftists have had a very awful time since Trump got elected they're also not going to vote for someone UNLESS they are dedicated to protecting trans rights.

You're basically gonna have to run on an equal platform of curbing immigration WITHOUT detainment, but also be pro-LGBTQ+ by protecting trans rights BUT without allowing them into the bathrooms of their identity. That's probably gonna be the only way to win. You're also gonna have to be a person committed to stopping the war in Iran (it seems most Republicans and Democrats agree on that actually) but you're gonna have to have a neutral stance on Isreal and Palestine because you'll either be seen as a Zionist or Antisemetic.

Once the economic downturn in the west levels out (which i predict will be in the early 2030s) we'll probably move back to a progressive political conversation. It happened in the 2010s after the financial crash, it'll happen again.

REALITY

If this happens, I think AOC is smart enough to understand that she wouldn't win. But she'd be able to get more progressive talking points out there, which could force Dems to take more aggressive and leftist stances. And honestly, that's pretty smart.

Could also force her or allies into cabinet consideration

i think realistically we need someone like newsom, its not about the perfect candidate, its about someone who can go toe to toe petty with whoever the reps run in 2028.

if trump finds a ludicrous way to run again, i honestly will consider moving back to canada cuz im so done with US politics

Ngl I honestly don’t think that’s true. If anything, I think centrists are probably more unpopular than they’ve ever been because Trump 2.0 has shown how thoroughly morally and ideologically bankrupt they are and how disinterested they are in actually governing (not to mention the positions most centrists hold are widely unpopular). I know not everything’s about Israel, but I think supporting Israel (and AIPAC candidates) was basically the centrist position: both parties did it, people either didn’t care or actively supported it. Now, AIPAC money is radioactive in both parties and the “centrists” (center-left and center-right) are scrambling to adjust their messaging without losing donor money while they hemorrhage support. I think this dynamic also extends well beyond Israel as well (Gen AI + data centers, Epstein, economic populism).

I think, if anything, the country is probably more primed than ever for a genuine economic populist who’s socially progressive because the material conditions have gotten so bad that the bottom is falling out of a lot of the culture war machine because people don’t have the bandwidth to give a **** about stuff like that, so they’d probably be more open to voting for, let’s say, a candidate that supports LGBTQ+ issues if they spend the bulk of their campaign fighting for affordability (basically the Bernie Sanders model).

I think she'd have a big uphill battle but she has the support of Bernie and many progressive organizations. I'd consider voting for her.

The LAST thing we need is a cookie cutter moderate dem. The country is sick of them and even they know it.

But this is all under the assumption that we get to have a free and fair election in 2028
