Girl, if we’re talking bad lyrics…

”Like an old desire that you know too well (Back to eat you alive)
Feedin' on the torture, rollercoaster to hell (Visions conquer your mind)
Melting in the heat of another lover (Strung out, you're outta time)
Spinnin' 'round in circles 'cause she rung your bell (Your bell, your bell)” 🪦

Couple those clunkers with that robotic “disco” beat and Mary, we have a winner.

These lyrics are incredibly MAYHEM coded though, so yeah, it definitely was a reject from the album :billie:

Idk though, it still feels in line with that album for me   Like, don’t kill me but I think these lyrics are better than half the record 🫣

Eh, I don’t see it, tbh. I’m not saying MAYHEM’s lyrics are incredible, but I think what they lack in poeticism, they generally make up for with punch, rhythmic sensibility, and world building. These lyrics are rambling, overstuffed, drag rhythmically, and barely paint a cohesive picture, much less tell a coherent story. I’m not sure there’s a single song on the album that’s lyrically weaker than SOAW, tbh.

1) Shape Of A Woman
2) Glamorous Life
3) RUNWAY

Shape Of A Woman isn’t a GREAT song… but it’s better than some of you VPN people said.

That siren/alarm sound, especially in the intro?

Hot as hell 🚨🔥

Glamorous Life is a good song… but it isn’t as GREAT as some of you VPN people said.

Strong vocals & memorable chorus, but idk if it’s “one of her best ballads.”

I’ll think on that one, but idk…

The proper ranking :gaycat:

I mean, I think the story of the song is basically the experience of falling in love with a woman being comparable to a siren (i.e., she’s so beautiful and stunning, but she’s also deadly and dangerous). It’s not a particularly innovative, but I think most of MAYHEM, lyrically, isn’t either.

Ironically, Blade of Grass, a song that most people hate, is one of the most lyrically interesting songs on the record because the whole grass motif is incredibly personal as opposed to some generic themes or metaphors.

I don’t think the lacks punch of rhythmic sensibility either. The staccato-ness of the call and response in the verses an ear worm and makes sense to me, rhythmically. Similarly, the melody and her delivery of the post chorus is also very punch and catchy.

I get what the lyrics are trying to say, I just don’t really think it says it well (particularly the verses). I happen to think BOG is one of the best songs on the album lyrically, but it just doesn’t connect with me personally. I think the staccato call and response is one of the better moments in the song, but I think the overall trajectory of the melody in the verses feels aimless. I also think the post-chorus fails to stand out because it’s more or less the same as hook A of the chorus (repetitions of “shape of a woman”).

We clearly don’t agree about SOAW because, while a fine to decent entry in her discog, I just think it pales in comparison to most of the disco cuts on MAYHEM and feels like a B-side/a song that isn’t fully realized to me. If the track leaned more into the fusion of disco and glam rock in its production and the writing in the verses (à la the chorus’ homage to KISS’ I Was Made For Loving You), I think the song could’ve been stronger, but as is, it doesn’t click for me.

Shape of a woman has what blade of grass doesnt, a chorus and post chorus. I agree the idea of blade of grass is beautiful. But i still feel like what she made musically doesnt go hand in hand with the heavy music and so slow and eerie

I feel like we agree 90% of the time on stuff, so I guess our thoughts on SOAW will be each other's vices :laughga:

For me, overall, they all sound like soundtrack/movie songs - and that's the point, I figured.  They're nice additions and a pleasant surprise...we keep getting lovely content from our Lady.

#1 - Glamorous Life is beautiful and I love some of the interesting production elements...love these type of Gaga pop ballads (e.g., Hold My Hand)
#2 - SOAW - like her delivery on it; tender and fun lyrics
#3 - Runway - it's a lot of fun and gets stuck in my brain; rad video
