PS5 debuts big base price hike

what justifies this?

RAM prices have gone up and Sony's parts stockpile is running out. Sony also shipped a bunch of PS5s to the US prior to the tariffs last year and shared that they had enough inventory in the US to sustain prices for a year. That year is coming up. Also, possibly priming for PS6 prices next year as they seem to have decided not to delay the console launch.

In one generation we went from $500 consoles to, most likely when the PS6 & next xbox come out, $1000+ consoles. The world is so ****ed in every way. It's hard to believe.

Honestly, i doubt we'll get another Xbox console.

Microsoft has gutted the old Xbox teams and essentially just turned it into a glorified streaming platform for PCs.

I’m wondering if they’ll have a “create/customize your own game” feature. Maybe you’ll even be able to  incorporate some of their characters from games they created or licensed.

Sony is so fiercely protective of it's IP I can't see it giving creative control to AI in this manner, plus I feel this would be too intensive for on-device processing. I could see a customizable difficulty though that changes automatically based on user skill. Any other AI implementation would be when to push notifications to players based on content, when to give players hints on levels/areas based on overall game achievement completion, and a bunch of optimization to use cheaper hardware without sacrificing game quality. Sony seems to really want to bring down development time too, wanting to bring back 4-5 year development cycles so possible backend optimizations and developer tools.

Aye, bit like Steam's Steam Machine.

I cant see Xbox/Steam doing to well with it personally. I think Sony & Nintendo are well placed to hoover up the console market with the Xbox & Steam both essentially trying to launch budget gaming PCs.

What exactly are they supposed to do when a 10% tariff is introduced and RAM prices triple?

Absorb the cost. Idgaf anymore I don't have any sympathy for multibillion dollar companies. Like oh boo hoo you're only projected to make $990million this year instead of $1.2billion in profits. Oh noooo the CEO of Playstation is ONLY going to take home $20million this year instead of $30million dollars that's a decrease in his yearly salary of 33% which is a HUGE loss for him. They can all d*e for all I care. Eat the rich. Tear their flesh off their bones and devour them

But they already do absorb the costs. Consoles have never been profitable. The cost was already subsidized. They've just skyrocketed in the past year and I think Sony did an exceptional job at mitigating impact to customers. It's been a year of tariffs and increased supply chain costs and up until now the price wasn't impacted. At the end of the day gaming is still a hobby, and a relatively cheap one at that. Games have not increased in price at the rate of inflation, NES games today would cost $90 adjusted for inflation. Yet consumers can spend $70 on the high end to experience a 40 hour game that used to be 5-10 hours long. Hell, they can get access to a huge swath of games for $20/month. A PS1 adjusted for inflation I believe would also still be $550. That's almost a bargain when you consider access to other art forms. Lastly, videogames are very much still an art form. And Sony gives studios a lot of autonomy in what games to develop as well as give them creative control over the storytelling and mechanics of the game. We can't argue that we should pay artists fairly and then expect any different from the video game industry.

It's RAM and SSD price increases due to AI

Xbox did this last year and Nintendo did it for the switch 1 (weird lol) last year as well. (I would expect a switch 2 increase soon)

its crazy, the RAM I bought here in Canada for $450 increased to 1750$ this year :enigma:

this ps5  increase is for Japan, UK, Europe, US, and Canada - tariffs aren’t relevant in this, it’s simply shortages
