I'm really not trying to be argumentative here but if you cannot acknowledge that how you have this titled is misleading and intended to be attention-grabbing in a specific type of way - I don't know what to say.

I guess we can just pretend.

Blame it on the edit then?? 🙄

He said what he said. The context is already there for people to see. We understand the intention he had. He simply should’ve rephrased it—that’s all. I don’t get what’s difficult to understand about that.

I love when a thread descends into discourse wars over something realistically harmless and well intentioned if clumsy.

Meanwhile, the MAGA establishment is pushing to try and resume it's mass deportations of people of colour.

I'm really at an interesting point here because I can't decide how I feel about this.

I will say, firstly, this post from Pop Crave is really really really poorly being framed in bad context. He did NOT say he got blacker in the sense of anything related to his actual skin color, vibe, or race. This post from Pop Crave is intentionally baiting for likes and clicks.

If you go watch the video, he was literally being asked about retreating into the safety net of whiteness. Historically white artists have used black culture to leverage popularity and then when they get success, they dip out on the culture.

Honestly this is one of those weird situations where it is a catch 22 for white people.

I'm not saying he should have worded it that way and his PR team should have prepared him better. But in all seriousness I don't think he was saying he literally thinks he is blacker. He meant it more like "they wanted me to veer into whiteness now that I'm successful, but I chose to align even more so with black culture." It's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

This is one of those rare times I think if you read between the lines and actually understand where he is coming from, he meant that he wanted to be more solid with black people- not that he wanted to use them for money and just give them no flowers. Matter fact, he was saying the opposite and explicitly stating he thinks black people make better music in America. :lolga:

Nobody cares about context or meaning tho. Its always about specific words and sentences with cancel culture :toofunny:

Im so disensatized to it at this point i usually dont bother to acknowlege it or respond my opinion on it anymore but ur comment dived in so :ladyhaha:

All i can say context matters so much, and while the intentions seem pure, it’s getting tiring people trying to downplay offenses taken in the black community.

Too lazy to try and even go about this discourse, but america literally handed the presidency to a white pedophile racist misogynistic man  that has led us into this false religious war we’re fighting rn, and while people want to sum it to to oh but kamala policy this, or trump says it raw and real crap, the reality of is a lot is just deep misogyny, and you guessed it…..racism.

So yea, i do think he meant it clearly in the way of honoring and being more influenced by black music, but in that very sense why exactly go with “I got blacker in his response” . He literally explains himself without needing to use that.

And then on top of that the other people distinguish he didn’t get into country or rock…(whiter music) as if those also dont have legitimate  black roots( despite mainly being dominated by white people rn )., and we just had Beyoncé try to bring that to our attention, and help bring attention to other black country artists with cowboy carter.

I also do believe the internet is full of senationalism and trying to garner engagement, but even with his full context is just simply  unnecessary and weird to say that.

I still remember a quote in a similar context where Beyoncé said she wants to be latina cause she loves the culture. Beautiful intentions i think from both stars, but just completely unnecessary way to express adoration of , influence, or in inspiration from a culture. Even when Patti Labelle called Ariana a white black girl, like not too problematic at all. But then for Ariana to toss the whole blaccent/dark tan away….

And given the history of erasure of black culture, these minute things really can matter.

However want to reassert the dude obviously has good intentions, but it’s like read the room.

The black community just had to deal with some ofour emotions being downplayed with the Bafta incident( no shame at all to the man with tourette’s, as i feel it was purely intentional on BBC/Bafta and the dude was ****ed over by them in the same way the actors were)

I do want to say at least he mentioned Voodoo as inspiration too, and while i havent to his new album, a lot of musicians have been inspired or influenced by D’Angelo , including myself. And really knowing that album and appreciating is beautiful on its own so kudos to him.
