PartySick 172,605
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a towering civil rights icon who battled alongside Martin Luther King Jr., negotiated global hostage releases, and shamed corporations for their lack of corporate diversity and failure to support voting rights, has died. Jackson was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, a Democratic presidential candidate and one of the world's best-known Black activists. PartySick 172,605
An actual icon Aside from being close to MJ, especially in his later years, and the civil rights movement, what I think is most important about him is how he engaged with artists during the 80s which drove rap and hip-hop to take a socially vocal place in music. Those genres became about black anger, frustration, and empowerment and he found himself being referenced in lyrics for decades. Such a culturally significant figure. It's sad that his last glimpse of America was such a tarnished and dark one but I hope he passed with optimism about the world he helped to change.
