I don't think it's a big deal as long as they aren't doing gay clichés that can be offensive. But Connor is also someone who's repeatedly said he wants to live a private life - he's done the least amount of public appearances etc I feel like him "closeting" himself (while still always hanging out publicly with his potential bf lol) is more him just closing his life off to the hoards. Like there's a story from the showrunner where Connor didn't know the show had blown up until he saw a physical queue for a Heated Rivalry party near where he was living or staying.
