Maybe I misunderstood your point then I won't be surprised though. Hell, I'm 99% sure my phone tracks my keystrokes and logs my words somewhere and I'm sure buried somewhere deep in my carrier's contract is a line about "purchasing this phone is consenting to this collection of data". Still no reason for me to be ok with a chat app requiring my ID and face Whimsical bitch

Plus they've also started trying to compile lists of people based on sexuality/gender ID etc and label them domestic terrorists. So its also worth avoiding being one of the first targets for the camps. I think people forget we have been asked for years on job applications and what nor our sexual and gender ID is. If you want to change your birth certificate gender for instance or a passport when you transition it’s a long process but they know where we live and who you are. if in some weirdly authoritative future they could turn up in the middle of the night and kidnap us all if they wanted to. I guess the good thing about social media is it makes people hyper aware of issues so the extremes won’t happen without blow back. (But then again we have an entire country having genocide committed against it by the same group of people who suffered the holocaust, and people defending and even denying it so what am I saying) Edited February 9 by gagzus

Even on iPhones if you so much as want to download apps it says that, sad really. When you read most T&Cs now they almost always have a clause about sharing and keeping data, but then you can’t continue on if you don’t accept the T&Cs which is wild Edited February 9 by gagzus

And that's their failure as parents. I don't have any kids, it's not my responsibility to childproof society. But if I DID have a child, I'd teach them as best as I could about how to be safe online and make sure they're as knowledgeable and careful as possible when navigating online spaces. Then I'd hope for the best. I certainly wouldn't petition apps and companies to gather user info (including my child's info) to play security theater. Welp then you go tell the parents of abused children it is their fault cause they didn’t read the terms of privacy of an app. I assume you read all of them. If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

So hyperbolic As someone who was abused as a child, the fault absolutely lies BOTH at the feet of the people who were supposed to protect me (guardians, family, school) and the abusers. Not once would I expect someone sharing a space with me back then to have changed something about the way they live or relinquish some of their rights so that someone else could pretend they were doing something to stop the abuse. Pink Eye 4,513
There's one fact that I think is important to this discussion: there's a snuff market on Discord that preys on teens. "Masters" pay or blackmail teens into filming themselves torturing animals. There are specialized police investigations doing surveillance in these servers to find the people, mostly teenagers, that engage in these violent acts. A chief of police stated that around 30 animals are killed and the act streamed on Discord EVERY NIGHT in Brazil. Recently, a dog was tortured in Florianópolis by a group of teens and it got widespread media attention. And with it, rose the suspicion of a Discord streamed act. The investigation is ongoing and haven't connected the case to Discord yet. These crimes happening on Discord are not very well reported by mainstream media, it mostly circulates around well informed spaces. But I think this could be what's behind the age verification. What about other parties interested in your data that aren't the government? Say hackers? Considering that Discord was part of 2+ data breaches last year alone, it's not out of the question. On top of that, it's not even Discord itself using proprietary technology, it's sent to a third party, k-id. And k-id doesn't even process information itself either, it gets sent to Stripe and Veratad. So we're sharing biometric or ID with 4 parties to POSSIBLY screen out children since biometric age verification algorithms aren't reliable? What about children that look older? And adults that look younger? Back to the government surveillance argument. Sure a lot of information can be associated with us indirectly via IP or some other identifier. But this makes it a lot more common to directly identify us and it also establishes the intent of the user linking themselves. IP info can be spoofed, algorithms can mess up and associate us with data that doesn't belong to us, etc. But this directly associates users with their content. Which can be a good thing when considering CSPAM and other illegal activity. But it denies plausible deniability to users in discriminatory activity by the government. On top of that, algorithms to detect sexual orientation based on face shape were proven to be reliable years ago. So we're just going to trust they already have this information and willingly give them more identifiers while they're openly building databases to discriminate against people and keep lists? If companies cared about keeping children safe they wouldn't have made their platforms addicting in the first place. There's a million ways these methods have proven ineffective anyways that disprove this as an attempt to curb inappropriate child activity. I understand parents aren't doing enough to protect their children on the internet. But the responsibility doesn't fall on companies or users to regulate it and it's also not right forcing millions of people to age verify so you can feel safe knowing that you as an individual aren't talking to children on the internet. THAT is a weird take imo because what are we even doing to put ourselves in situations where we might be having inappropriate conversations with children? On top of that we're normalizing the practice. Are we going to hand this information to Instagram and Snapchat and such next? What about Grindr? Because you can't say that this is safe in places like Discord and then state you don't trust Grindr, Instagram, etc with this information. This sets a ridiculously low bar for privacy. I want to go into a stall or have dividers in the bathroom so I can feel at ease and have a sense of privacy even if I have nothing to hide and everyone has the same anatomy.
AsleepOnTheCeiling 6,976
2 hours ago, SpiritBunny said: Some of yall probably believe the earth is flat. We're in the year 2026 where it's shown that a billionaire conceptualized microtransactions with the aim of indoctrinating kids into an economy, created spaces in 4Chan to grow bigotry and other social dissent, and engineered multiple facets of society to set up eugenics. A year where a president has direct control over a social media, deploys 100s of US ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to international land, threatens to take sovereign land, invades sovereign land without Congressional approval, sends ICE agents to target its own citizens, and "investigates" ballots for an election 6 years ago that he lost. But this is chalked up to a conspiracy theory despite numerous lawsuits against big tech for invasive and illegal privacy breaches. If you're in denial or just simply too dumb to understand the possible negative outcomes of biometric age verification you can just say that lmao. The same people warning about this were the same people warning against the idea of banning Tik Tok btw. And now information is actively suppressed on that same app after it was given to people closely tied to the president because people bought into it being a national security threat.
