I really hate the "Bad Bunny won for political reasons" thing. As if it's a DEI Grammy or something and not recognition that he legitimately deserves as an incredible artist and person.

I doubt she will ever top MAYHEM in terms of success

Don't we say this with every era? After the catastrophic ARTPOP era, when stans were prepared to follow a diminished version of a failed popstar, she did a few years of universally critically acclaimed work, scored one of the highest viewed and rated halftime shows, and scored a massive movie debut.

Then her "return to pop", despite being derailed by covid, scored a #1 and her biggest tour.

Mayhem (if you decide to include DWAS :nails:) has her biggest song on record, the biggest audience for any single performer ever, and likely her biggest tour, outdoing the last one.

She always elevates from one era to the next in one way or another tbh. If we view Mayhem as a sign of things to come, LG8 is gonna be insane.

let alone DWAS, which didn’t even score a general field GRAMMY cause it lost to Not Like Us… like seriously??? DWAS is one of, if not the biggest hit of all time.

All she has to do is make a song with The Weend and DWAS is dead meat :icant:

Gaga + any man with established streaming power = the biggest hit either of them has.

Some of y'all really need to touch grass if you’re this heartbroken over an award. At the end of the day, putting this much weight on a pop star’s victory, which has no bearing on your life, is strange.

Thank you for this feedback. My next thread will be titled Still Devastated or Devastation Continues. Permanent Devastation if LG8 doesn't take it.

This forum lacks basic knowledge about anything that isn’t female Pop stars.

A lot of people here seem to be extremely closed minded from anything that deviates from that world.

Bad Bunny’s album is great. It has critical acclaim, public acclaim, and the cultural impact to be absolutely deserving of AOTY.

The discrediting of other artists is sickening and it’s honestly bordering racism how some people here are acting like Latino culture and music is not deserving of such a highly coveted award.

The way some people are discrediting Bad Bunny's win is giving me the ick.

When "Born This Way" didn't win, the fans said "the Grammys need to award albums with social and political messages." Mayhem doesn't win, "they need to stop awarding albums just to make political statements." Which is it then?

I feel like the way some of you "fans" have reacted to this goes against everything Gaga stands for.

GGD is an echo chamber but outside of this forum, the sad reality is, a lot of publications and people didn't put Mayhem as their album winning. Even this site alone, did we all just magically forgot how many on GGD reacted to this album? It was pretty polarizing when the album finally dropped. Some said there was too many filler songs, it wasn't experimental enough, where is "darkga?", there is too much disco, Killah sucks, Blade of Grass is the worst thing she's written, the list goes on and on. This fanbase is so confusing sometimes.

We're fine with albums with social and political messages winning. We just want them to be good. That's the difference. I listened to songs from Bad Bunny's album and am mystified why it got a 95 on Metacritic. There's nothing new or innovative here, a song or two about political issues doesn't mean the entire album's about that or should be classified as such. The song that he won for was just a basic sex song, not even one of the more serious ones.

A lot of these publications get it wrong, so they really can't be trusted. And it doesn't matter what Gaga fans thought of the album at the time or even what we think at all. Awards committees famously award the big GP approved hits but actually fail to notice the true artistic gems of an artist's career. When she couldn't get a general field win for undeniable hits belowed by the GP like Shallow and DWAS, it's a sign that there's some serious bias going on.

In what way? I listened to the album with English translations, btw, so it's not like I just didn't understand it. I've also got knowledge of the Spanish language and Latin culture, I grew up with these influences in my life, despite being British. I'm not saying any of this as an uneducated and unenlightened Westerner. I've heard better Latin music than this, Rosalia just released an amazing album which I'm going to mention in the quote below. She's actually doing something new and innovative with exceptional talent and while I hope that'll get its flowers, I doubt it'll be as awarded as DTMF. But because she doesn't have the commercial success that Bad Bunny has, I doubt it'll be noticed to the same extent. I'm all about the music and yet no one wants to have a proper discussion about what apparently makes DTMF so amazing, they're just determined to believe that we "just don't get it." If it's so great, break down the specifics, in lyrics, production, vocals, etc. why that is so.

Not all of us are like that. I am more than open to any genre and/or nationality winning AOTY. I just don't believe DTMF is good enough to qualify. I think it all came down to commercial success, I'm sure there are more deserving Latin names who just don't have BB's profile that will never taste Grammy glory because the academy want to nominate and award names who most people are familiar with. I've long given up on why some albums are critically acclaimed, DTMF doesn't impress me or show me anything that I've not heard from many other mainstream Latin artists. Like I said, commercial success and name recognition was likely what gave him that push.

I loved Rosalia's LUX album and will be rooting for it at next year's ceremony. And she sings not just in Spanish but in multiple languages and is so bold, innovative and experimental with this album in a way that's deserving of AOTY. But I'm aware of the fact that she just doesn't have that massive success which will reduce her chances. And now, because BB's won, it's highly unlikely that a foreign language album from a Spanish speaker will win big 2 years in a row. Once the academy has appealed to a certain genre/demographic/success level one year, it usually means someone quite different wins next year.

I don't care what kind of music wins as long as it's good. I just didn't think that was the case this time and I say that as someone who understood the album. My vote will always go to the music and nothing else. My only potential bias is when an artist is a bad person, I don't think they deserve awards, but then, those I think are bad people don't make good music anyway, in my opinion. For me, my choices are 100% music based, pure and spiritual.

Having  "knowledge" in the Spanish Language and Latin Culture, while saying you've heard better latin albums and using Rosalia as your example... is interesting to say the least. Especially when it's been very highly discussed how she would win latin awards and be in latin categories, when she's not Latina.

But back on topic, no matter what I say, nothing will change your mind about why Mayhem lost. That already is a bias. It's a stupid argument because so many people have made up their minds. Mayhem lost, and nothing is going to change that or rescind the award.

I love Mayhem, I genuinely do, but I knew going in it probably wasn't going to win and prepared myself for that. Unfortunately Mayhem went against heavy competition. If Bad Bunny didn't win, Kendrick was going to win, or Sabrina, or Tyler the Creator or whoever else was nominated and it'd just be the same biased or nasty discourse towards these artists, especially towards the POC artists.
