Much of the world is essentially a digital surveillance state and has been for the better part of 15-20 years and this TikTok policy (which isn’t materially different than the previous iteration of their policy from years ago) doesn’t change that. That’s the information you provide yourself (whether upon filling out a survey or sharing as part of your content). This won’t be automatically collected (because there is no way to do that). And the government seeing it as a greenlight to have the Chinese asset essentially forcibly seized so they themselves could harvest the user data and control the algorithm. Before you say "I'd rather America gather its own data than the Chinese gather it", there's only one group currently funding a terrorist organization occupying American cities. Yet you can see what Google infers about you based on your activity and they make a lot of assumptions about you as a demographic. Marital status, sexual orientation, age, etc. The fact that Tik Tok is notorious for the accuracy of it's algorithm should be extremely worrying when the new board is closely tied to Trump. They won’t know my marital status if I don’t share it myself as well as citizenship and immigration status, even nationality tbh, unless they explicitly ask for it. You can’t label me as an American living in Europe based on my algorithm, although that’s probably how I look based on my activity. To various degrees of intensity that‘s how all social media works, behind the profile you create the platform kinda creates for lack of better words some kind of „shadow profile“ which the algorithm uses to show you what you see. It turns very dark and dystopian when that information can be directly accessed (for example by government institutions like police, ICE, etc.) to hunt, investigate and hurt people as some sort of data base of citizens. They'll look at who shares videos with you, who you follow, what you watch and interact with. If you feel the algorithm serves things you like, they generally know. They will still label you as that as an assumption to better serve you content and increase value for ads. The issue comes in when that information is sold to whoever or given. In a just society it wouldn't be a problem. But it becomes a problem in a place where they grab you off the street based on your accent or your skin color.
