nodandsmile 11,351
I think celebrities should keep how much they are worth to themselves, especially nowadays 😬 Gagita hasn't updated her sh*t in more than a decade

Eh, again, if literally one (1) of the wealthiest surrendered a fraction of their fortune, the overall quality of life for basically everyone would improve substantially. I get where you’re coming from, but I honestly think it’s probably more productive to go after the top 1/10th of 1% than it is to go after the underlings and I don’t really think it even makes sense to include Beyoncé in the same conversation as Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos considering that she doesn’t even have a sliver of their wealth (which is a testament to how disgustingly wealthy they all are). I’d rather direct that vitriol towards the people more explicitly and explosively exploiting human labor on a significantly larger scale than go for the little fish. I'll direct the vitriol generally towards all of them and effort will increased based on their net worth Mean words for Beyoncé or Taylor, marching in protests for the ones with tangible power. Besides, every billionaire is greedy as sin and I have plenty of pure, unfilter hatred for the ultra wealthy to go around 'cause unlike them, I believe sharing really is caring 🥀 1

While I do agree that Musk et al are the worst of the worst because they actively promote and expand the exploitation used to accrue this kind of obscene wealth. It's really important we don't diminish the agency of the quieter billionaires who fully embrace the exploitative mechanisms created by the louder billionaires. Their silence is a deliberate PR move. I see that angle, but I also kind of feel that focusing the same level or similar levels of vitriol on lower hanging fruit also kind of lets the more powerful billionaires off the hook (similar to how some folks demanding their fave make xyz political statement without applying the same or more pressure on politicians that could actually effect material change lets the political class off the hook). Real though. Being worth what is practically an infinite sum of money means nothing when the reason you're able to extract that kind of wealth is because everyone who does the actual work for you has their wages subsidized by welfare programs which are funded by taxes that everyone pays, even those workers, even undocumented immigrants, but rarely by the billionaires. They're not people, they're leeches. Worse than leeches 'cause biology doesn't implore them to suck others dry like the friendly hirudinea. Imagine the money it takes to offset the greed of just a few hundred people. 🥀

Well, to the celebrity vs politician thing, they're different classes of people and you'd naturally have different responses. If Lady Gaga is quiet about a particular issue I think she, as someone with a huge platform and the eyes and ears of millions, should be vocal about or has an obligation to be vocal about, then I'll say so online. This forum, TikTok, or wherever else I share my opinions. I might be less inclined to stream her music or make the trip to see a show. But that's where it ends. If there's a particular politician who is ignoring an issue I care about, I'll assess whether that politician is in a position to address that problem and then I'll be vocal online but also use my vote, donations, and volunteer time (either to that politician or to their opponents) to give my voice a tangible effect. Same here, where I'll bitch about Taylor Swift or Beyoncé (and eventually Gaga ) but I'm certainly not showing up at any concerts with signs. But if I see a cybertruck? I'll flip off the driver. If there's a billionaire funded politician having an event near by? I'm there with my comfy clothes ready to protest all day long. If I see someone in a MAGA hat? I'm calling them a POS. I don't think pointing out slight injustices equates them to larger ones or invalidates your response to outright tragedies like Elon Musk having the ear of the president...or the president being who he is "Man, I'd really like this thorn out of my palm" doesn't mean "go ahead and ignore my broken leg for now" 🥀

Like you have to admit, your immediate response being “Beyoncé has become the scourge of the earth by becoming a billionaire” isn’t exactly proportionate lol. I understand where you’re coming from now that you’ve laid it out, but I do think a lot of people (and again, not necessarily you, which is why I didn’t quote you on that one) do substitute performative outrage for political pragmatism and focusing energy on material change. I think this is an issue where, materially, you and I basically agree, but I think rhetorically and, on some level, emotionally, we don’t.
