Ticketmaster has given fans of Olivia Dean partial refunds after the British singer condemned ticketing companies for allowing touts to relist tickets for her North American tour at more than 14 times their face value.

After the tour sold out in minutes on 21 November and tickets appeared on resale sites at prices in excess of $1,000, Dean addressed the major ticketing companies on Instagram: “@Ticketmaster @Livenation @AEGPresents you are providing a disgusting service,” she wrote. “The prices at which you’re allowing tickets to be re-sold is vile and completely against our wishes. Live music should be affordable and accessible and we need to find a new way of making that possible. BE BETTER.”

Ticketmaster initially replied: “We support artists’ ability to set the terms of how their tickets are sold and resold. @OliviaDeano, we will cap resale prices on our site at face value and hope other resale sites will follow.”

The ticketing company subsequently said it is in the process of “refunding fans for any markup they already paid to resellers on Ticketmaster”.

In a statement, Michael Rapino, CEO of Ticketmaster’s parent company Live Nation Entertainment, said: “We share Olivia’s desire to keep live music accessible and ensure fans have the best access to affordable tickets. While we can’t require other marketplaces to honour artists’ resale preferences, we echo Olivia’s call to ‘do better’ and have taken steps to lead by example.”

It’s no secret that concert prices have gotten seriously out of control in recent years, with fans of pretty much every artist having to pay out an obscene amount of money to attend their fave’s show. From dynamic pricing, which sees ticket prices soar in accordance with demand, to shady resales where bots have snapped up all the face value tickets and are now reselling them at a hugely inflated price, these days, you’d be incredibly lucky to snag a ticket for less than a few hundred dollars.

Posting to her Instagram story, Olivia wrote: “i’m sorry that there seems to be an issue with ticket re-selling and pricing. my team are currently looking into it. it is extremely frustrating as the last thing i want is for anyone to be scammed or overcharged for our show :("

She then tagged the three major ticket websites, Ticketmaster, Live Nation and AEG, directly as she added: “you are providing a disgusting service the prices at which you’re allowing tickets to be re-sold is vile and completely against our wishes live music should be affordable and accessible and we need to find a new way of making that possible BE BETTER.”

Shortly afterward, Olivia returned to her social media page with some good news, writing: “After many conversations with my team, Ticketmaster and AXS have agreed to refund the difference to anyone who has paid over face value for a ticket and will cap all future ticket resale prices to face value for the North American run of the tour.”

And while most people praised Olivia for being so proactive in helping her fans, it didn’t take long for others to point out that her success in securing this result proved it was possible all along — meaning that countless other big-name, more established artists simply chose not to challenge the inflated prices on behalf of their fans.

Don’t be mistaken, if they could sell out the arenas at the higher mistake price, nothing would have changed. They did the math and figured out they could make more money by charging less and getting more tickets sold.

I know we're not seing their contracts clauses etc but it gets harder to believe the scam of today's prices can't be controlled by stars.

DON'T BUY FROM RESELLERS GUYS UNLESS YOU'RE FULLY SURE IT'S FROM A VALIDATED PLATFORM. A friend of mine just got his little sister giving him Mayhem ball ticket as a present. He waited a long time and was told the ticket weren't valid at the gates with the dude explaining to them how small details should have warned them on these tickets. Apparently many others were refused for the same reason.

She had paid 2X400 € to make her big bro happy and they both went home with teary eyes.

Which is exactly all we want at the end of the day, less charges and more seats so REAL fans can have the opportunity to celebrate with their faves.

funny thing is that most fans are (or play) delusional believing that all these artists have no ideal about their products prices, including touring 

that would be like: “ok, I wanna have control of and know all things on my career and businesses but when it comes to tickets, please, don’t say anything to me, please xoxo”
