Variety Forgetting that Lady Gaga and Cher Exists

Agree with everyone RE Cher and, to a lesser extent, Gaga. I believe Cher's first role was in Mask. Then she did Silkwood. She was incredible in both. Moonstruck was her next big role, but she also starred in hits like Witches of Eastwick and Mermaids. She was a bonafide A list movie star for years.

Gaga could be that too, if she wants to. They "industry" does not blame her for Joker. Gaga could be starring in any film she wanted if and when she chooses to do so.

Yes, but her acting was not bad in those films. They were just poorly written and/or poorly marketed.

HoG could be half the length and twice as good. And Gaga and Jered Leto are carrying so much for that movie that they should sue for chiropractic care.

Joker 2 I actually think is good. I just wish they delved deeper into their individual psychoses and highlighted the insanity factor more.

I thought her acting was bad in HoG, ngl. But that was mainly because of the accent. I just couldn't take it, or her, seriously. The movie could've been really camp with all the crazy work her and Leto were doing, but they wanted to make it more dramatic. And tbh, that is the fault of the writers/director, but I still thought HoG was her weakest acting role.

Joker 2 is good from a character study perspective, but it doesn't feel like a movie. It feels like a very long epilogue to the first film, and the constant back and forth between the asylum and the courtroom was tiring after a while. I know this isn't what Todd Phillips wanted, but I wish we had just gotten a Bonnie & Clyde-style crime/action movie with big musical numbers that play up the campiness and delusions of Joker & Harley.

I didn't wanna say it but I was like "...where is Gaga's second good film?"

Mind you, I loved both HoG and Joker 2, but that's mostly 'cause I'll usually find a way to love her projects.

Except for DWAS :diane:

And like half of Chromatica :diane:

You loved both HoG and Joker 2?? :selena: I mean, I didn't hate Joker 2 as much as a lot of people did, but it just fell flat; I like everything up until they got to the courtroom. The acting (both hers and Joaquin's) is what made the movie watchable.

Agree, but for me, the shade is less about Gaga than it is about Cher. Her performance in Moonstruck is honestly one of the most iconic and enduring of all time.

I think Gaga is yet to have her true Oscar moment role. But it will come.

ASIB really could've been her Oscar moment tbh. I didn't really expect her to win, but I think after HoG and Joker 2, it's going to be harder to obtain that "moment." I like that she's doing small cameos rn (e.g., Wednesday and Devil Wears Prada 2). It gives her something to do in the acting world without the heavy commitment. It also diversifies her portfolio, which is desperately needed imo.

I mean...let's be honest though. ASIB is undeniably Gaga's best movie. HoG and Joker 2 were both awful.

the thing about HOG is that it achieved what it set out to achieve, i.e. it made some money. Ridley wasn't trying to make an all-time cinema classic, and ... ehh ... he didn't.

JFAD was a trainwreck. I'd love to know what happened. Was that really the movie that Todd wanted to make or did something go wrong during filiming and he just cobbled together what he could ?

Well the reason they weren’t mentioned is bc they also succeeded. It’s jsut saying she did what many have tried and failed to do not that she was first

Easy. It was only made for the huge stacks of cash thrown at him to do it and he made a movie out of some spite and then was out of his depth with how to handle the concept. Basically textbook reason not to make a sequel for yuck’s sake

Economy

They merely listed big stars who failed. They never said Ariana was the first ever
