At first it does seem a little out of place but like others have said I think the song Joanne is the direct tribute & the other songs focus more on other aspects of human trauma/healing. AD - Violence, death, religion JW - Turbulent relationships MR - Heartbreak, faith Etc etc DIC lyrics covers the theme of trauma in my eyes as she mentions "feels good to be lonely", "rub the pain out", "hurts inside but not this time". I see it as a way that she deals with trauma, maybe not her aunt's death specifically but just the woes of life. I'm sure Joanne would be able to see the artistic vision behind it. I always just thought of it as a song about herself being sad because Taylor was not with her and their relationship was becoming rocky and it’s a common thing for people with depression to use masturbation to give oneself serotonin. It’s absolutely a feminist album. But people often forget the fact we know; she played the album for Interscope and they made her work with Bloodpop (who had just given Justin Bieber his career revival with Skrillex at the time) to come in and add a “pop” flare back into the album and I feel like DIC was one of those songs. I have this whole theory about Joanne's narrative and how the album's overarching theme is trauma and trauma responses. DiC is about loneliness, hypersexuality (something a lot of SA'd people develop), and self indulgence. As others have said, the Joanne album is about Gaga, not Joanne. Grigio Girls is obviously about her girlfriends rallying around each other and Sonja in particular. And of course Joanne is about her dad and what she felt like he would’ve said to her if he could see her one more time. This right here.
