To many (due in part to himself and the Fox News cycle), Newsom is among the group that represents coastal elitism bc he’s pretty smug. As for why people left might not like him, it’s bc he really has a tendency to get behind some BAD policies like anti homeless ones but then at the same time genuinely good ones but the prevailing feeling is he picks where he leans for vanity reasons not moral principle. For instance, he is very outspoken against Trump but people feel like he’s doing it to make a run for president not just bc it matters a lot to himz Basically he seems slimey and opportunistic to people which is not wholly unfounded. There’s definitely worse picks, for sure. He just has some trust issue baggage but yeah a liberal governor from California is going to have a hard time regardless of who it was Thank you! That was really helpful and well explained. I had no idea there was such an antagonism between coastal people and others. It sounds like he is an opportunist, but I also just assume most if not all politicians are like this. If not him, then hopefully someone else more appealing to the entire country will emerge. Yeah I don’t think he’s like some special duck in being aggressively opportunistic I just think he’s from California and is objectively “pretty” so people read that as LA fakery lmfao if he was more manly handsome it would probably be different but he’s kinda pretty boy vibes. Typing it all out it’s insane how binary gender is in American culture at large hahahaha but yeah there’s animosity between coasts and others, frankly, bc a lot of people dream of being there and not everyone can and then coastal people (which is to say LA and New York) can have a tendency to condescend to middle and southern Americans bc it’s the difference of being where “things happen” vs not. but yeah he’s far from the worst option to be president imo but I think factors considered he would have a hard time getting elected. Then again, people said that about Trump and he just simply didn’t listen to naysayers so maybe there’s something to disregarding electability and just going for it
thedirtymonster 788
I'm still here for Amy Klobuchar. She does the work, and knows how to maneuver our political climate. She's also palatable and relatable being from Minnesota. Edited October 30, 2025 by thedirtymonster Missed an N in Minnesota.

Biden ran on one term presidency and then would pave the way for the next gen and Newsom REALLY wanted it (I imagine some promising convos were had). And then his running again and dropping out torpedo’d that so he’s been trying the last few months to build some national momentum hence the rebrand as like dirtbag liberal on socials I still feel that this entire mess would have been avoided if Biden had just stuck to what he basically claimed was a one and done deal. If your entire 2020 platform was basically "not this guy", you should really just hang it up. He did some great things, but the American people didn't really recognize it nor did they really want HIM in the first place. The party should have obliberated him and outcast him the moment he announced his second race. Not fallen in line. 1 hour ago, monstertoronto said: Why do people not think Gavin Newsom is a good idea? He’s been so vocal in opposing Trump. From Canada he seems like one of the more outspoken US politicians, especially with his stand on the GOP redistricting. I get the sense that a lot of Americans don’t like him because he’s from California? Why is that? I don’t understand the objections to him. Basically what the other user said. California is a huge outcast in America, good and bad. Nancy Pelosi is another good example of this elitism. The problems of California are seen as unique to the region and the environment it's people are in is also unique to them. The closest Americans that can relate are the east coast states, and that's a limited experience too. Especially with places like Florida, the Carolinas, etc being part of the Bible belt and gerrymandered.

I voted for Kamala and think Hillary would have done better than Dump, but Americans are too misogynistic to elect a woman any time soon. I think they can do the job just as well if not better, but people just won't vote for a woman, especially not in this political environment. Amy’s perfectly fine, but I don’t think she really knows the climate that well given the overall lack of urgency I’ve seen from her and Senate Dems regarding Trump’s authoritarianism We have forgotten our public MANNERS

He was ultra clear about it in 2020 and then got greedy. His legacy would have been so much better off had he not run again. I think even Kamala could have actually won had she had the entire campaign cycle. And not to mention the way his team obviously sabotaged her prior to him conceding in the race. They could have built her image so much better as VP

Boomers are not only problem now, cos Gen X and late Gen Z are now adopting conservatism too. These people probably willing to compromise for a moderate, however it will be another big defeat if someone who come off too strong with left agendas. Gen Z are adopting populism & anti-elitism tbh. They're still winnable by left populism as the polling in the UK & the Netherlands shows The gays know how to party

Like it was very much a bait and switch bc my hunch is he got all those moderates to drop out in succession around him under the promise it was one term not two

It's a lot of hype because he's acting like Trump. But democratic voters will remember they actually hate that soon enough.
