PC is one of the best songs hands down, and I remember thinking the entire time leading up to the album that it would be rock... and when she had posted she wasn't making a rock album I overhyped myself thinking she was just messing around and it would be rock! I'm glad MAYHEM ended up the way it did, but hopefully LG8 or something smaller in between will be a complete rock album! I'm also a big metalhead, and dying for her to explore that genre more because she's got the vocals for it 1 1

I’m not saying Michael decided anything for her, just that he might’ve had some influence on how the album ended up sounding

I think that is the best aspect of Gaga.. She will keep making music for decades to come I'm sure and who knows what else she will create in that time! You just know she will be in the music textbooks of history and remembered as a legend

Not this once again... She literally said in the Zane Lowe interview PC came way after she started working in the album and, for a moment, wanted to change the whole sound to fit Perfect Celebrity, not the other way around. Michael just encouraged her to stay true to the process. 4
hELXIG 43,532
She said that usually she goes back and reworks the songs at the end so they sound a bit more cohesive, but this time around she decided not to bother and just let them all stand on their own. With all the talk of dark poetry and hard beats and 'I'm your gothic aunt' and all the black hair and outfits and dark imagery I honestly think Mayhem had a different direction, then last minute she decided to write more songs and just did whatever My theory is that the album was originally all songs like Disease, Abracadabra, Perfect Celebrity, Can't Stop The High and Kill For Love, but she kept writing and went in a different direction and said f.uck it, lets just pick all my favourites Honestly though I wish she stuck with the original idea, or maybe did a 'two discs' kind of approach. I feel like because of the split you're either a 'first half of the album and bonus tracks' lover or 'second half of the album' lover I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. 1

She was going to make the whole album sound like PC and then changed her mind. I cry for this every day. Perfect Celebrity is my favourite song on the album. If the second half had more PC/Abra/Disease vibes it might have been my fav Gaga album of all time. Unfortunately the last 7 songs get pretty much no play from me I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. 1 1 1
elegidadedios 2,436
Like just say you don't like the project as a whole thing and give it a go lol instead of gaslighting yourselves into thinking she wanted to make the album sound like PC from the beginning and was influenced by her partner to change sound direction
GoldenNovember 637
Because it's literally mayhem. And it's fabulous! The album is the essence of Lady Gaga, she couldn't have created a more authentic, yet forward thinking sound. Her early music had plenty of disco and funk elements, and I am happy with her revisiting and refining her earlier sound to perfection. Edited 18 hours ago by GoldenNovember It's hard to light a candle, easy to curse the dark instead.

She almost hyperfixated on the sound of Perfect Celebrity and made a grunge album, but she had to resist the impulse. Whether you think that was the right call or not is subjective, but it seems critics really loved the diversity of sound. I definitely love the expanded sound. But I'd be lying if I said I don't want an entire album like Perfect Celebrity. One of my favorite songs on the album.

She said from the beginning that the album was very diverse, sonically speaking. It's kind of a big reason why the album is called "MAYHEM." Well, it's the MAYHEM if it all (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ a thief in my head, you criminal (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡
TheARTPOPball 798
I think the reality of the situation is that gaga really doesn’t want to return to the “dark” pop sound that her fans are pressing her for. I mean, joanne, chromatica, ASIB, Harlequin, ARTPOP are all much brighter sonically and i think that’s what wants to do, and i support that. she has proven to us with disease ( and half the abracadabra production) that she is capable, and she simply chose to develop the album in a different direction, bc she wanted to. I mean you can literally hear how much fun she is having vocally in harlequin. If thats where her heart is then so be it!
LordByron28 1,139
Idk the album seems like a successor to Born This Way. Born This Way has this unusual mash of influences and the album is really a journey. I follow a more coherent trend with Mayhem in the direction it goes in. Chromatica and TFM are the most consistent of her albums in terms of sticking to a specific sound and theme. However, most of her albums veer off in a bunch of directions. 10 minutes ago, hELXIG said: She said that usually she goes back and reworks the songs at the end so they sound a bit more cohesive, but this time around she decided not to bother and just let them all stand on their own. I feel like because of the split you're either a 'first half of the album and bonus tracks' lover or 'second half of the album' lover I can’t agree here. The album sounds pretty cohesive. Kill for love is one of the funkiest tracks on the album. You can feel the Michael Jackson and Prince influence so I’m unsure why you picked that track. Most people in my sphere that have listened to this album find this to be pretty cohesive with vocals and production. While it does span a wide breadth of genres, this isn’t like ARTPOP which bounced from experimental pop singing about art and Greek gods to an 80’s pop r&b tinged track about sex dreams to a rap/pop crossover to a pop/rock track to heavy electronic to a Pop/R&B crossover track to an electro-pop experimental mid-tempo ballad. Born this way was all over the place with Americano, Bad Kids, Judas, Born This Way, Edge of Glory, You & I, Scheisse, Fashion of his Love, Bloody Mary, etc. The Fame similarly was all over the place with Rap/Pop crossovers, heavy electronic, europop, 80s pop-rock, etc. Joanne kinda stayed the course with Americana influences with classic rock artists like Stevie Knicks and Elton John as well as some country like Shania. TFM was pretty consistent but also only 8 tracks and still Telephone, Speechless and Teeth were a bit outside the core sound. Chromatica was probably the most consistent of her albums just doing house, dance, electro-pop influences about mental health issues.
