I mean, look, it’s certainly not her best especially when the ASIB album exists with much better songs. That said, it’s not inauthentic bc she didn’t *try to sound like some “not herself” character. She was just reckoning her relationship with her father at the time and wanted to make music that could hopefully touch him. My only issue is I think she didn’t give it enough time to cook to tease more of that side of it out so the album is kinda just “nice” but not necessarily as arresting of your attention as her songwriting is known to be. At the end of the day, I never hated Joanne whatsoever. I liked it a lot, but it’s a Gaga who was very much struggling with who she was and what mattered most to her. I think something like Mayhem is more aptly a self titled style album than Joanne in that regard but it got marketed that way to its detriment.

my opinion also reflects this sentiment as time has gone on and she's spoken about how the album failed to achieve what she set out to do

looking back, the era has an awkward aura around it where gaga feels as if she's putting one toe in the pond vs mayhem where she's jumped right in the deep end

mother, what must i do?

Exactly. I think Joanne she was grieving a LOT and I don’t just mean Taylor. She was grieving her family’s dynamic, really, up to that point but I think was somewhat fearful to really dive into that pain bc of all the other issues she was going through at the time. But for what was written and how she’s come out the other side I totally see how she views Joanne as a special little odd duckling in her discography even if it isn’t totally that heart shatteringly complex account of all that grief. The ethos of it meant a lot to her at the time. But Mayhem is her more matured, having gone through all of that, not needing to put on a hat to please anyone—even her dad—and just be her own artistic identity

Absolutely adore her using this tour to give justice to the experiences that were stolen from her and the fans during the Born This Way Ball and Joanne World Tour
