The album is far from great and I’m a genuine fan but let’s be more logical about this. Taylor has always sold crazy well even when she was considered a B-list artist, even up till reputation she managed to sell more than 1M in week 1 with only one album variant. Lover was short of doing that because streaming started to outweigh physical sales (it did have 4 physical variants but they were target exclusive). So I think folklore onwards her team switched to digital variants to adjust for streamings impact on physical media. What I’m trying to say here that its almost impossible in the current music scene to sell 1M+ in week 1 without digital variants, Adele’s 30 proved that. But what actually might be impressive about showgirl is even without the variants I think it could have easily sold more than 1M+ in week 1 and that is still insane for 2025. Deserved? not really imo but she has the most committed fanbase, enough to buy a crazy amount of variants. I just wish the album was better more than anything.

those limited time variants make all the difference, just seems so fraudulent to pressure fans into buying multiple copies by only giving them 48 hours per variant and then claim it's record breaking

mind you, adele's record was reached without a tonne of variants and i think that context really matters. history will make it seem like people ran to the stores to get taylor's new album, but the reality is she just milked her obsessed fanbase

and the question is, why should an album make 1m+ anyway? we're consuming music differently now and the real results around the 250k sales first, week, which is not bad.

I think the US singers are still stuck in the idea that this career can make them crazy rich.. but it's a dying industry that trying some cheap gimmicks like variants to make fans to spend more money.

Now c’mon now, in no way was she gonna sell 250K with one variant. With one variant she was bound to sell 1M in one week at least. They’re expecting 3M with variants. The eras tour really catapulted her exposure, so you have the GP tuning from the get go this time + the dedicated fans buying all the variants.
