So it’s called a higher harmony? Interesting. I wish it was on the album version.

Gorehound 4,749 Posted yesterday at 12:55 PM Share Posted yesterday at 12:55 PM (edited) Garden Of Eden is arguably a "better song" 100%. The heavy, dirty, squelching instrumental and extended outro are ridiculously good. However I'm not much of a fan of the verses. Idk why I just think she could've done something a bit more interesting and smutty with them, and the chorus (while beautiful) has a slightly sterile feel to it after a while. But overall it's immaculately designed and produced, and a highlight on Mayhem. But Venus wins for me. It remains a sensational and euphoric experience regardless of its many flaws, and has been one of my all-time favourite guilty pleasure Gaga songs ever since it's release. I don't rly know how to explain it but the pure, undeniable JOY bursting throughout this song is lush, and that chorus is just orgasmic! The choral verses are bizarre and imaginative, as are the almost gospel-like vocals and nods to 60's and 70's psychedelia. You can definitely see what Gaga was trying to achieve with this song, and I think had she worked with a better group of writers and producers and given Venus a "Garden Of Eden" treatment, then it might have been excellent. But yes it's completely riddled with flaws (that skeletal silly bridge, the slightly awkward second verse, and the overall jarring structural design) which is such a shame. But they don't stop me from adoring this song, and in a way the flaws come across as kind of charming. It remains a strange gem, and a perfect example of Gaga in the absolute prime of CrazyGa passion. I’m sure DJ White Shadow has said it a few times, and even Gaga admitted it was like “open heart surgery”. Lots of label interference. Arguments with producers over creative differences. Even Zedd stated that Gaga was the “most opinionated musician he had ever met” which doesn’t really sound like a compliment to me . Then there’s Gaga’s injury, drug abuse and overall mental health etc. And 50+ songs written for it etc, makes me think that the album was lacking a more organised and fixed direction overall. But she was clearly absolutely bursting with big, bold ideas and creativity at that time, and each song on ARTPOP definitely had the potential to be excellent. But I think things would’ve gone much better had she worked with a better and more sophisticated group of song writers and producers. I mean just look at all the different MANiCURE demos… Lodes of great ideas, but they clearly struggled to know what to do with them. Mayhem is a perfect example of a healthy, happy and professional collaboration. I'm fine, Ta

Wet Fire 7,759
As much as I've obsessed over Venus, GOE is simply a better crafted pop song. The verse to pre-chorus transition in Venus doesn't work the best for me even though both parts are superb on their own, meanwhile GOE flows immaculately throughout.

I remember the MELTDOWNS when we found out the Aura verses had changed, and the Swinefest versions didn't make it to the album. There really was a big editing issue with channeling those different ideas into the best version of each song. And it's unfortunate because looking back you see how fine ARTPOP sounds and how the electronic music stands the test of time.

What’s that called? That’s a harmony technique where multiple vocal layerings are used in a song. In this case, it was just her decision to highlight it in that perfomance specifically, but if you pay attention, you can hear it the original song as well. She does a lot of it in many performances, and it can be useful as a technique to avoid voice exhaustion or even after a cord straining, when lower tones are mostly picked, for example. It’s also, very common used as base backing for performances (frequently mistaken for playback when it’s too loud).
