Lady Gaga revealed that her part in Wednesday season 2 came after she got a phone call that the show was looking for music:

“I immediately had a song in mind called ‘The Dead Dance,’ and I had started working on it. But once I knew it was going to be for Wednesday, I decided that I was going to work on it even more, and I made it extra special for the show. To me, when you know that music and pop culture and Tim Burton all come together with this cast, that’s a very special recipe.

After that happened, they asked me if I wanted to be on the show, and I said, ‘Absolutely.’”

Cute ! So it confirms that it was a Mayhem demo that she decided to complete for the show. That makes sense

Yeah it was definitely part of the MAYHEM process before she was involved : same producers, same electronics funky vibes, same horror themed lyrics, instrumentals are matching.

It makes sense on MAYHEM. It's a total fit on it being added.

Not surprised that it was originally part of the MAYHEM sessions. It fits in perfectly with the rest of the album

We don't know for sure if the TDD would be on Mayhem if is wasn't for Wednesday. It could have been just one of hundreds of demos that she was cycling through.

Oh so this comes to show it was meant to be on the standard version... I wonder what will the sl*w monsters say now!

I don't think is was ever planned to be on the standard. It was a demo that didn't make the cut but it worked for Wednesday so she finished it. Anyways that's my guess

Isn't that just what I said but differently worded?

i think we should lay the “original frankenstein” theory to rest :laughga:

(but i wouldn’t be surprised if it had similar themes/lyrical content to TDD or other mayhem songs)

We'll never know but I guarantee it wasn't titled 'The Dead Dance' originally. That lyric ("do the dead dance") feels so forced and like an add-on to make it a TikTok dance challenge. I would've preferred the song without that awful bridge and lyric because it wouldn't have made the whole thing feel like an intentional attempt at virality. I can understand though why she'd add that for Wednesday, given BM became a viral dance challenge because of it. She obviously saw this song as an opportunity at recreating that moment but these things can't be manufactured.

Well you said it was meant for the standard version. That implies that it made the cut but she cut it and kept it for Wednesday, that's not the same thing.

Yeah there's no way this song would've made the cut. It lacks the grit and authenticity of most of the other Mayhem songs; it's way too generic. She rightly discarded it (I think) but then picked it up again when she saw an opportunity to try and create another viral moment from Wednesday ("do the dead dance").

Idk if we can say it would have made the album based on this.
But it was definitely part of the early Mayhem sessions before she pivoted to the industrial sound on Disease/Pefect Celebrity etc.

Timeline wise, she seems to have been working on this track at the very beginning of the recording sessions for what became Mayhem.
